lol bear stories: (black bears - do not attempt with grizzlies - you are food)
i was parked overnight in a spot near a dumpster in a mountainous area. i was sleeping in the truck bed and in middle of night there was banging on the dumpster. it was bear proof and the bear was not having any of it. i just stayed still hoping i would not be involved and fortunately it worked out that way. bear just gave up and walked away from dumpster. note to self: don't park near dumpsters in backwoods.

another time i was on backpacking trip with friends in yosemite high country. remote but popular with backpackers - several days in.
we did everything right, hanging our packs and food, etc. where a bear could not get it.
in the night a full grown bear sent a cub up and it knocked everything off the limbs. we yelled to chase them off but they just grabbed the packs and started running off with them. we let them have it (you don't take food away from a bear anyway) so we would at least get our ripped packs back in the morning. they got into everything and we had only freeze dried scrambled eggs to eat for the rest of the shortened trip. apparently the bears felt the same about the freeze dried eggs as we did.
the next morning, that same bear walked near our campsite. You are supposed to make noise and scare them off (unless cubs with them). i banged pots and yelled and bear paid no attention, didn't even break stride. i was just standing there with pot in hand watching it ignore me. they were totally familiar with backpacking food sources and the idiots that bring it to them. they are very smart.

    edit: oh yeah, another one:
we were camped in a volcano caldera. at night you could see a few campfires in the distance across it. then one distant campsite erupted in yelling and making noise.
it stopped. about 15 minutes later another campsite did the same thing. this happened at about 4 campsites. we were lucky and it never got to us. it was a bear making its nightly check around the caldera. pretty funny watching it unfold.

    Edit 2...thought of another one:
(i hope this entertains some...the memories are entertaining me)
a backpacking trip...friend was fishing off a jutting rock in a high country lake near the campsite. he caught a couple and laid them on the rock behind him. all of a sudden we heard him yelling. i looked up and saw a bear, that snuck up behind him, running off with one of his fish in its mouth as friend was yelling and waving his arms in the air. we named the bear butterscotch that trip.

pure speculation but i have seen bears methodically go thru a trailhead parking area and try all the exterior door handles.
if it found one unlocked, it probably opened the door and crawled in. since they are so big and clumsy, likely the door got bumped and swung shut/latched. interior door handles probably above that bear's pay grade. i have been in cars where i have to look real hard to find the interior handle :D
even if bear does not get in, trying the exterior handles usually does a job on the paint. powerful claws.

edit: what to do if you see it:

I have a couple bears that come check on the truck every week. I've had 1 gator in the pool, several deer & babies, a massive lake turtle that had a bunch of babies in the pool and the random mallard ducks. The other night we were outside by the fire pit, we had an owl take out a duck. You could hear the duck crying and the owl squeezing its neck. 1st pic is the big boy. The gator was on the small side less that 6ft.

OT, but speaking of ducks. We had a seal (too big a duck for a Bluefish) take out a duck at our marina. Merrimack River Newburyport. Just got dark, sitting on boat chilling. Some ducks land in slip bay across from us.
All of a sudden QUACK_QUACK_QUACK-duck is moving 90mph across the water for 30' then gone under. Like WOW!

He forgot to mention the bobcats, coyotes, and rattlesnakes. And scorpions. But not to worry - the pythons will clean out most of them…
