I actually went back to a first gen from my second gen. I like this 3rd gen better than both previous models.

Hell yeah I would do it again! I think this truck is more refined than my second gen. The motor and transmission are taking a little getting used to but I think after I have the TSB done, the transmission will be better.

Well I couldn't swallow the $40K they wanted for a new 3rd gen here in Canada.......for less power and a cab that seemed smaller to me. You guys are going to shoot me, but I traded my 2nd gen on a loaded demo 2016 Ram Laramie. I've driven a gov't fleet Ram (5.7 with 6 speed) for over a year now and am totally impressed with it, and this Laramie (5.7 with 8 speed) is an incredible truck. Every option available, 400 hp when needed. The engine and transmission combo is amazing. I am getting the same overall mpg, much better highway mpg, and less insurance cost. Plus I can haul my 6' son and his hockey buddies and gear to the rink without their knees hitting their chin in the back seat. Probably after a few years when we can downsize again I will get back into a Tacoma. Maybe they will have all the bugs worked out by then...

I would definitely look around. When I went in with my 09 with almost double your mileage, I simply said "I'm not trading in my current truck unless I get $19k for it", granted they gave me $18,700 which is damn close. I think you should be able to do better than $17k for yours, but I'm not sure about Cali.

Had an 06 DCSB TRDOR Prerunner for several years (~120k mi) before trading it in on a Fiat 500 Abarth for a couple of years. I miss the low end grunt of the 4.0 (though I'm getting 2-3 better mpg with the 3.5 even with 4wd) but just about everything else in the 2017 is better. It still has a similar overall Tacoma feel (hard to put into words) but it's just more refined and has more creature comforts that put it better in line with modern cars. I don't regret getting the 2017 in the least.

Definitely agree with you on all points. I love all the standard parts that toyota added - projectors, locking tailgate, soft drop gate, bed light, power rear slider, auto up/down front windows, heated seats, NAV, etc. that the old one did not come with. I agree it's way smoother.
Also agree that the engine is lethargic at low RPM, tho it feels like v-tec kiketh-in over 3,500rpm... not unlike my old 3vze or 5vzfe... it will definitely blow a 2nd gen away on the highway, and as you said, doesn't feel like it wants to throw a rod.

FYI i've been using ECT all week, and my MPG is better than with ECT off. I think getting up to speed quicker instead of slow/lugging acceleration is helping. ECT is staying on from now on.

The jury is still out on that with me. I think it might end up being one of those "it depends on how you drive" things. I'm getting much worse with ECT on, around 19-20. I was getting 23 mpg with it off. (After TSB for trans was done). Though if I pull the camper, I have to have it on or I can't get to speed quick enough (even for my slow ass).

I had my 05 for almost 12 years and put almost 200k on it. I loved that truck, it never let me down no matter what the weather or situation, and only ever did basic maintance. That being said I would have no problem trading it in again for the 3rd gen. I love what they have done with it. They made all the upgrades I hoped for and the automatic is not as bad as everyone says. My 05 had the 6 speed manual and to me I like the new 6 speed auto.

Well said, I had a 2010 and the 3rd gen is a better truck, feels tighter. I like the modern gadgets in my daily driver.

OK, so I just took notice that the 3rd gen has an optional sunroof and an electric rear slider. That is bad ass.

I would buy a 3rd gen all over again. Owned for 7 months, almost 11k miles and zero issues.

I certainly like the 17 more than my old 15, but do wish this had the bottom end power that the 4.0 had. Other than that this is a better truck (pending any mechanical issues with the 3rd gen)

Did you know the new trucks beat the 2nd gens in 0-60 and 1/4 mile, and gauntlet towing competition by 45 seconds !
