Bottom end power (low RPMs), the 4.0 is better. Rev it up and the 3.5 is better. I did see the Ike Guantlet towing test, but who is going to drive at that high of RPM? They were at 5800, and even said they're almost at 6k. That motor was screaming!

Should i? Is it necessary on a 2017? I don't have any of the tranny issues that people are mentioning.

OK, some more driving, some more insight.
I find if i'm doing stop and go, or pure highway, ECT gives me better MPG.

if i'm cruising at speeds between 30 and 50mph, ECT OFF gives me better MPG. keeping ECT on keeps the tranny from dropping to 6th gear below 55mph.

    :)

For about first 1.5 seconds than the 3rd gen passes by.
An engineering marvel yes. Welcome to 2016 technology.
Leaves the 2nd gen in the rear view mirror, bottomline.
It beat the 2nd gen in the towing test by almost a freakin minute !!!!!!!!!!
No one wants to hear the excuse, bbbbut he was at a higher rpm at the finish line. Bottom line 2nd gen loses in 0-60 and 1/4 mile times.

How often do you do 0-60 and 1/4mile runs? I don't at all. Bottom line, the 4.0 had better bottom end, low RPM power for regular driving no matter how much better the 3.5 is on the top. I like the 3.5 better overall, but miss the low end torque while at low RPMs, when I could speed up without downshifting. Below 2k the 3.5 doesn't have anything when the 4.0 did. That's my point

My old 4 liter was the first toyota i had that didn't feel like a toyota - AKA i didn't have to rev the piss out of it to get any power. my 3vze, 5vzfe, 3sgte and now my 2gr need to be rev'd to have fun. I can no longer spin the wheels from a stop. Can't believe it doesnt have enough low end power to do that. I literally had to feather the 1gr off the line most of the time. Maybe it's just throttle tuning?

went from a 13 sport prerunner to a 17 trd offroad 4x4, would do it again in a heartbeat. Interior is way better and of course 4x4 vs 4x2 for me is a nice improvement.

I don't buy a car to spin the wheels off stop. Was over that after 20.

I agree. My 2002 S10 with the 4.3L had way more low rpm torque. Want to pass? Just squeeze the gas a little and the truck speeds up easy. The 2016+ has to downshift to get there. That being said, this engine just doesn't seem to mind the higher rpms.... I just wish the exhaust was quieter when the engine is doing 3000+ rpms.

Hmmm, I guess I really do feel young, love to spin the tires once in while and really like the noise when I get on the gas.

I went from a 07 DCLB Sport 2wd to a 16 DCSB SR 4x4. Really the only thing in question is the 4.0 vs the 3.5. Besides that the 3rd Gen is better in every other category. The 3.5 is still a nice engine and drives great. But its not the 4.0 I was use to. For me personally, I wish I would have gone with a decked out 15' 4x4 instead of a 16'. But I'm not unhappy with my 16'

IDK, I owned a 2002 Z28 with a six speed. That car easily got 28mpgs doing 80mph on the way back from Dallas, TX. It ran 13.5 at 104mph and I couldn't drive a stick at the track worth a dang. If you milked it, you could get over 30mpgs. I think the future will be having the right sized mill, the right metals and coatings in the engine, the right lubricants, reduced weight, and better aerodynamics. Full sized trucks are getting similar mpgs as the Tacos..... The GM twins get better mpgs than the Tacos.

I really like my truck, but I think Toyota could have done better in the drivetrain and still got better mpgs.

I had a 05 access cab trd off road with the 6 speed manual. Loved the low end torque, but when I got in the 3rd gen for the test drive it drove so nice and handled so much better that I really don't mind the engine difference. If you want the power step on it and it is there. My big grip with the 4.0 was that over 3k rpm it seemed like that engine was screaming. It just did not seem confortable above 3k. That alone made me adjust how I shifted the tranny and kept me from having more "fun" with the manual tranny.

Still have my '05 PreRunner and I bought a '17 DCLB in 4x4. I'd buy a third gen again for sure. Have 2500 miles on it so far and no issues but a slight whisper at speed from the driver's side door and the voice control sucks.

I'm not gonna worry about the voice control, anyway. I woulda bought a GMC if I felt a need to yell at my truck.

Previous comments about the third gen being a better ride and drive are definitely true in my case. My wife didn't really like driving around in the PreRunner but actually enjoys going for a drive in the new one.

PreRunner was manual (my preference) and the '17 is auto, so can't compare the transmissions.

I was happy with my '05 when I drove it off the dealer lot in '05 and I'm happy with '17 when I drove it off the dealer lot in '16.

I was dead set on buying 3rd gen TRD OR. I even waited a year to see if the bugs are worked out. Not really - particularly the buzzing vibration Since I don't like to gamble with my money, I went for a perfect moderate mileage example of a 2012 TX Baja instead. Love it, looks tons better than the 3rd gen, even if it lacks in some comfort features.
