Can you share with us which cover you plan to buy? Never heard of this being done and if its a soft top roll up or flip I'm not sure it will hold up very well. Why plastidip the cover?

Sorry about that, is the Diamondback cover. [IMG]
I have two friends with the Diamondback. One has the black one, he quote that after awhile the black coating will look faded and unappealing. The raw aluminum seems like it can be repainted and better to maintained.

I stand by what I said. I’ve plasti dipped plenty a parts. Never had an issue. The engine cover would peel one big piece because there is no break. It’s a big plastic mold. The parts you wanted colored were one piece with the cover. So when it dried it dried as one piece. If there is a break like there is in a fender flare or in the Tacoma decal, etc. when it dries it dries as two pieces. One that is “wrapped” around the lettering or flare and then since it went on as a “liquid” the gap separates the next piece that dries which is laid flat on the truck. Or the piece you peel off. That tiny gap is why you can let it dry and then peel.
I’m sure it’ll work fine to peel right after last spray but seems messier and is unnecessary is all I’m saying.

Yeah, I mean it may work in this application since there is a clean break area. I'd just hate to do that big of a piece and spend all that time for it to end up peeling the whole thing. It's easy to mask and leave a gap and apply a final piece of tape after so that once you apply the last wet coat you can peel just that piece of tape and leave the rest until it dries. Shoot even if it was skinny pinstriping tape.

I can't see you having any issues with dipping that. I've dipped some sheet metal before and it's worked out really well.

it will definitely work. it'll cover it. you'd be able to peel it after. only issue i see is longevity. not sure how well it will hold up with the constant use and if you're setting things on it, etc. reason flares, rims, decals etc work so well is they are pretty much not touched besides a bit of a wash. worst case scenario is it doesn't work and you peel it all off. with that being said, make sure you do A TON of coats on something like that so you don't have issues peeling it off and also so it is thick and more durable.

if you (or anyone) is trying to peel pasti dip and its breaking up and not coming off easy, by goo gone in the spray form, spray it all over your plasti and let it sit, then hit it with a pressure washer and it'll come right off. works EVERY TIME like a charm.

Its my first time, never dipped anything. Any PD brand that is good?
Does wrapping it would be better than PD? The problem with wrapping it is that the top of the cover is diamond and not flat. Thoughts between the two options?

Ohh yeah, with that hardback style, yes it will definitely work. The more coats the better and longer it will last and if and when you want to peel it, it will come off easier.

No not just any PD brand. Get plastiDip ONLY. I tried that Rustoleum Sh*t only because they didn't have PlastiDip and its horrible.

Whats the longevity of this product, PD? I will hate to recoat every month or so. I want something as permanently as possible! The reason that i like the idea of PD is that it will protect the actual surface and further pill and reapply if i need too down the road.

Years if you do it right and apply enough coats. I had my wheels done black for over a year and never had to redip. When i plasti-dipped the whole truck i had it a year with no issues then just peeled it off.

He is my suggestion. Clean the surface really really REALY well. That's going to be what increases the longevity. If any grease, oil, or dirt is on the surface when you dip it. It will bubble up and/or peel eventually. I have always used a bottle of rubbing alcohol. Since your ordering this new, don't wash it with soap and water. You can run the risk of applying to early before its 100% dry or you just have to wait for 24hrs. Just get you some rubbing alcohol, pour it into a clean spray bottle and just spray and wipe with a microfiber towel. Wipe it down really good. Then after that its all about coats. If you can, for a surface that big, I get the DYC.com compressor and spray gun. I used that when I dipped the truck and it worked great. Otherwise, the cans will be fine just be sure you overlap coats well. Your first coat should be a light tacky coat. Around 50% coverage. You don't want to start with a heavy wet coat. A light tacky coat is a great foundation and after that, you can lay it on heavy. I wouldn't use less than 5 cans on that. If it were me I would get 6 cans to start and buy more if needed.

If you are going to use the cans i might suggest this little nozzel here.
    https://www.dipyourcar.com/collections/application-and-removal/products/dip-nozzle-2
You will get a wider spray and a more even application.

Did the grill and I like it so much more than the factory color. Put maybe 15k miles and minimal paint loss. Pretty easy fix at that. Stayed put while washing it also.

Ghosted the emblems and chrome bumper caps. It started coming off on the passenger side emblem when I was peeling but it’s hardly noticeable, I’m just gonna leave it and see how long it lasts. Have enough left over in the can to redo it eventually. Also on the bumper caps I probably coulda used glossifier so it’d have a little bit of a shine to it like the rest of the truck but the texture difference is hardly noticeable. We’ll see how long it lasts! If it ends up peeling I’ll probably just take it off and get the bumper covers. Only other thing I wanna do is upgrade the wheels/tires!

How many coats of paint you guys think is sufficient for this DB cover? FYI, this is a 3 piece top so I will be painting it a panel at a time.

That looks great!! Let me ask you, how did you get the letters and Toyota symbol done. When I did mine, I waited for it to dry thinking it will separate at the base, but it peeled off. I actually had to use a razor around the rest to keep it from peeling. Idk if I just did too many coats or what. I should have used some pin striping tape I think.

I am really liking the TRD stenciled on there. How did you get that done? I may have to do that.

How cold is it where you are? The ideal temperature for dipping is around 70 or higher. You can dip in cooler weather, but it is suggested to heat the cans such as have them sit in warm water and also wait 45-60 minutes between coats. So if your dipping in 40-50 degree weather definitely heat the cans in warm to hot water but not to hot. And allow ample time to dry between coats.
