You can trace it back to the part # by going on the Toyota owners site with the Vin.

Same with mine, and the same thing I was told. I think this has been standard procedure for the Dealerships so far.

It's less labor to drop a new diff in the truck vs actually fixing the original. They make [most] diff in Thailand paying rice cookies...Dealer actually makes more $ to fix the original...

My guess is they are just playing a shell game.

Juggling the same diffs to everyone.

Good idea....but it's a very small town--we all know each other.....know the tech personally....Toyota paid him 3 extra hours to do useless diagnostics..we all knew it was the ring and pinion.

    I'm thinking nationally.

Disclaimer I haven't had my replaced and probobaly won't until they actually fix the issue. My money is on pinion bearing.

My guess is preload wasn't set properly...but what I find hard to believe is how could Toyota botch SO many? You would think something like that should be fairly straight forward for a truck that has been tried and true for 2 generations.

Yes, but they really did short AT fluid--somehow--? sabotage...The diff suppliers pay staff 25 cents an hour. Do you think they care?

Interesting, has anyone else tested this out? I'm hesitant to do it because I don't want to give Toyota any reason to not take responsibility for this.

Some bean counter probably calculated what the minimum amt of trans fluid to fill each trans to be functional and probably got a nice bonus for it.

I checked into that and it was really a line screw up. They put 0W20 in my front and rear diffs T4R in Japan...It happens..
