Same, I'm going to wait till my 5k, have it documented and be told it's normal behavior. Then I'll do some experimenting.

They actually removed the transfer case and tested that oil too. It was clean and 75W --which is spec.

problem is the roads and traffic here.

I try to listen for it and if someone can post a link to the sound. I know it was posted in this thread but I don't feel like going through 100+ pages.

I can't tell if I have it or not since as soon as I let off I'm not sure if I'm just hearing wind noise or something or a faint howl, but my speed changes so quick when I let off since elevation changes etc that I'll go from 50-60 or 60-50 pretty quick and don't hear much. when i try giving it slight gas it usually downshifts and then I just hear the engine.

Certainly hope I don't have it as the Canadian side is next to useless as, or at least by me all the dealers are as I'm in the city and they sell more cars than trucks.

There's at least half a dozen YouTube videos on this. Just type in Tacoma rear diff howl and you'll find them

You cannot miss it if you have it, very distinct noise.

ya the slight sound I hear is a bit more of a whistle but close to the howl, still can't tell though I'll have to do a bit more experimenting see if I can hear it.

Thing is I don't often drive at those speeds either or not where I'm barely on the throttle so I don't often hear it and don't hear anything over the radio. Which is why if its just a noise issue I really don't care my hearing is terrible anyways. I'm just concerned with mechanical failure.

Yes, until we pinpoint what the exact cause of the howl is, it's hard to say whether it's just a noise if it's premature wear causing the howling. Which means down the road we're all f'ed

Holy crap. Two years in and they were able to get $1.00 worth of plastic plugs installed. At the factory even!!!

ya and I certainly hope it ends up just being a noise issue and not premature wear.

I just filled up and reset the trip so saw odometer too only have 4893km on it. So to be premature wear already is pathetic.
I didn't even bother wasting time with the dealer. Mine didn't have it, but I just went to lowes and bought some plugs and put them in. Cost me $4. Lowes is closer than the dealer and I don't need to waste time at the dealer.

I hear this weird noise coming from my truck too. It's like every time I drive it there's this sound of wind and a mechanical presents all around. The audibles increase with firm right heel tow.

Is this the reason I'm here?
