I still noticed a very slight howl yesterday on the freeway so I hope nobody went out and bought this thinking it was the end all be all solution... I had a harder time hearing or reproducing it but I definitely noticed it faintly. @WOTaco @tacoflavoredkisses1

I installed the OME heavy lift with Dakars back in Nov (IIRC) and an ARE topper.

I can't hear the noise as loud anymore UNLESS I have the back window and the topper window open.

Only mention this as the weight/lift mitigation did not do anything to fix it for me. I gave up as far as a fix and just went ahead and kitted out the truck the way I wanted to. F$#& Toyota and their "normal characteristic" noise

Agreed but technically it doesn't howl under load, it howls when you lightly feather the throttle putting the driveline into that very neutral state right between acceleration and deceleration.

Just wait. It progresses. Mine started that way too. Now it howls under deceleration too. I can kick it into neutral at 60 and hear it howl all the way down to around 30.

Fantastic. How many miles you at? I've said it before, I kind of hope my rear diff implodes before my power train warranty is up (although I'd rather they release a fix before that happens). LOL

On a side note, I find it pretty funny and a bit scary that the ad banner under this thread is trying to get us all to buy this! Fuckers! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00123J79O

I called Servco Toyota, the Toyota distributer here in Hawaii, to open a case with them. The representative suggested I file a complaint with the NHTSA because Toyota pays attention to those complaints. Anyone else do this already? I suppose this is has the potential to be a safety issue if the differential fails. But it's kind of a stretch.

My dealer replaced my differential in Feb, but the howl is just as loud.

Dino vs synthetic, thin vs thick, it doesn't change the sound at all.

Have my 2017 off-road at dealer to install new wheels. Told the service adviser about slight rear diff howl. He kind of just smiled. I said I assume he's heard that before since he smiled. He suggested it might be the tires, but acknowledged he's heard about it. I said we'd discuss at 10k service.

Just hit 5k miles... Sitting at the dealership right now. They swore they didn't hear it when they test drove it themselves. Then I went on a drive with a tech and he says he can now hear it, but blames it on my KO'2 's. So I made mention of the rear differential and how many other owners on TW had this issue. They said they would put it on the rack and took it back to inspect it. I asked him to document the howl he heard. He said he would. (Nothing will be done... lol) Just wanted it documented...

Put the stock tires back on if you can? They love to pass the blame!!!! Take to different dealer also.

There have been a couple times where I thought I heard the diff howling but it was just for the tiniest of a split second and I couldn't immediately recreate it.

Usually, when you miss a set-up on a diff they howl on accel. Period. Gear pre-load doesn't change. Makes me wonder if it's harmonics coming from somewhere else and it just mimics the sound of a diff howl.

Unfortunately i sold the tires... fortunately i still have the rims. Im gonna keep an eye out for a set of old tires to mount up the OR rims for a dealer visit. Didn't think it was gonna be this much of an issue. But i guess i gotta do what i gotta do.

With that said, is there anyone in socal buying new tires for their truck? If so, ill buy you a case of your favorite brew for the old tires that you're discarding. :) Looking for 265 70 16.
