If you know someone with stock wheels and tires could even do a swap just for a day. If you were near me I'd let you borrow them.

Alright guys, so I believe I have this as well in my Canadian 2017 DCOR SB, howl is only audible when the rear slider is open. Starts at 20km/h and has carried up to 120km/h (fastest I have gone as of right now) taking it in tomorrow to have them look at it. I have no modifications to the truck at all, other then a softopper canopy

Ask them to put on a lift and isolate to rear differential with a stethoscope. That will leave them with no doubt.

Think that will work for me as well smitty99? That beats finding some old tires then having them mounted just to undo it again.

I have an open case for this and have an appointment this week to get it fixed. My service advisor called yesterday and was pretty honest about it. He said he talked to the regional engineering guy and the fix, a kit and instructions are 60 days out. I know we've heard the before, but I gotta believe it's in the near future.

    We'll see.

If that is true at least they are working on the problem.

I'm pretty sure the kit will be some shims and setting the pinion preload, if needed.

Good guess but who knows. I don't think dealerships are going to be doing that since the carrier assembly comes (and is replaced) as a unit. I don't really think I'd trust the average dealership to do this correctly anyway. If this happens to be true, wouldn't it be futile to set preload on pinion that has been wearing incorrectly for thousands of miles?

The pinion bearing assembly uses a crush sleeve, the bearing preload is set by torquing the pinion nut to a certain value.

Wouldn't think it would take 60 days to pack a calibrated torque wrench, a socket, new pinion seal and a new crush washer (in case it was over torqued). Although instructions are a pain in the a$% and boring to do, I always drag my feet when I have to do them.

How does one go about checking the preload?

Is the howl something that is easily noticeable. I think I might hear something at around 60-65 mph but it is very very faint and I have an Access Cab 6 speed Manual BTW.

Mine is not that loud. Faint, but when its dead quiet at night and your're cruising at 55-60, boy is it noticeable.

If it is very very quiet can it be assumed the differential is good condition?

Its not true, I haven't heard anything yet im a Toyota Master tech that owns a 17 TRD OR that has the howling noise. If they come out with a fix it will be the whole rear diff, Im jut lazy to order and install one as ive been driving my beater to work and the howling hasn't annoyed me too much yet.

Talked with service manager at local dealership today. He said there was definitely a lot of discussion in their circles about the rear diff howling. He suggested there was work happening that was in the approval process and expected something to be available in the late summer or early fall timeframe. But, he also said not to hold him to it. Clearly, there is at least some degree of focus from Toyota.

You can't because its been preloaded, it shouldn't move, you don't know if it is preloaded (compressed) to .001" or .005" (example numbers). I should say you can't physically measure it, you could calculate it if you knew the washer relaxed length.

The crush washer is a like spring and keeps the bearings in compression as the pinion shaft warms up and elongates due to thermal expansion.
