Yes call corporate tell them your confidence has been shaken in the long term reliability of the truck due to a major drive line component failure so early ....if they ask you what you want to make you happy be prepared to give them an offer. Or you can do like I did and turn the tables on them, ask THEM to provide YOU with what they believe to be options of reasonable compensation. This is negotiation 101, let them show their cards and numbers first... :)

I just got a call from the dealership. Apparently my replacement differential came in so I'll be getting that swapped out next week.

All I can do is hope for the best I guess.

Slight update. Went to dealer yesterday 8/5/2016 --I let them know my 2nd rear differential is now starting to make the noise. The service manager said he wants me to bring it in first thing on Monday AM, they are going to get me a loaner vehicle and have the Regional Field Tech Specialist (engineer) come out and take a look at the rear end now. For those taking notes, this will be the second time the field tech rep has had to fly out from Denver to inspect my truck.... the initial being my leaf springs. Sales manager came out and started talking about buy-back or getting me into something else depending on how the feedback goes from Field Tech Rep. I take that with a grain of salt because obviously I would lose money on a buy back, as my vehicle would be devalued due to mileage and other factors. I do not think I would consider this option for that reason, unless they made it EXTREMELY attractive to where maybe I was only losing a few thousand to get into something brand new, of equal value and 2017 model year.

The only way I would accept a buy back is if they would give me a 2017 of exactly what I have straight up as a replacement, which obviously isn't going to happen. Plus, switching to another Taco might not even fix the issue, or give me other issues to deal with. Too much hassle for possibly no reward.

Well good luck! Sounds like we will probably be getting info on our trucks at roughly the same time. It should be interesting to hear what two different field reps say at the same time!

That's the dumbest thing I've heard today. If it were the tires it would be speed sensitive not throttle sensitive. He knew it wasn't the damn tires.

At 4K miles, I now notice a very slight howl upon deceleration 45-60.

Not loud enough yet for a dealer to claim "its a characteristic of the truck"

I started noticing this noise, a high pitched hum, at 55-60 mph under light throttle, at about 1500 miles. I also noticed my carrier bearing seeping an oily residue. At first it dripped a few times, but has since stopped. I had the dealer look at the bearing, their tech said that it might be excess grease seeping out. It was not grease, but oil, but I didn't argue. I noticed the hum after the oil residue. Might not be related as I was paying more attention to the truck as I had recently taken it off roading in Sedona AZ ( broken arrow) and had noticed the oil seep directly thereafter.

Are all of yours only occurring between 55-65 and then stopping completely? Mine is strongest by far at exactly 59 mph but I can still hear it from 55 all the way up to 80 (which is the fastest I've gone in the truck). It changes in pitch but it is still there for sure. 59 mph is the strongest though, can't miss it with the radio off.

When I finally take it in, sorry I'm not accepting a that's normal. If they pull that, I am fortunate to live around some top notch driveline shops. I'll tell Toyota if they deem it normal I'll get multiple, professional 3rd party diagnoses and if it is deemed not normal by them I will be filing for toyota to one, repair the issue, and two, cover my expenses for having to go to a 3rd party.

At that point I won't mind going to court if I have to.

If it is deemed normal through multiple 3rd party, I'll accept it.

You would think something like this would be easy to catch and fix during the testing stage of a redesigned vehicle. From reading this forum it seems to be very common.

I'm confused. I only hear the rear end howl on deceleration at 55mph.

People here are saying the hear it on acceleration?

What would be a possible fix if it is the driveshaft angle?

You are speaking my language. I hear it under decel. Or light accel. I have not noticed it above 65mph. But yours maybe at a more mature level of wear

Assuming working angles are correct and it's the pinion bearing going out, maybe they didn't account for the new pinion angle and it's running 'dry'. Overfill and an antifoaming agent might work.

It changes in pitch from a howling sound gradually to a "whirring" type sound. I admit though I am extremely sensitive to it and can hear it through all other noises on the truck, even if it is faint. I dealt with this noise for far too long on my old ford truck when the pinion bearing was eating itself alive. Granted the noise then was far louder, accompanied by a vibration that would make my mirrors blurry, and occurred at a much wider speed range.

It is eventually what made me break down and buy a brand new truck, the tacoma. Glad to see I haven't parted with an old friend....:frusty:

Would this cause the rear end to only make the noise at certain speeds and only while feathering the throttle?
