Mine started at 54 mph but it has been creeping up to your range but thankfully it has not gotten louder so far.

I don't know if Toyota built the diff themselves. It gets a little complicated if they contracted out the diff. The diff could be showing no excessive signs of wear, yet the diff supplier comes back and says "well, 'x' amount of noise was never a design requirement, it will take $$$ to figure out the root cause and change the design." Then a lot of back and forth happens before either 1. The design is changed or 2. Toyota determines a fix to "mask" the issue.

Everything is normal as far as Toyota and their stupid tech's are concerned, even your engine falling out the truck onto the road.

Update on Taco: Picked the truck up after toyota had for 5 days. New diff installed. No noise currently with the new one. I will have to keep an ear out, while I put some more miles on the truck.

Same thing happened to me with a new diff thousands of miles ago. It came back :(

I hope they've fixed it for sure.

I have a 2014 4x4 I just purchased in September. Within 2 weeks I noticed the howl. First was told it was exhaust noise, after disagreeing with that, I was told it was gear lash and a normal noise. Finally after 8months and basically refusing to leave without acknowledgment that something is wrong, they ordered a new differential today. Will update after install. This is my first and soon to be last Toyota.

Did you open a case with corporate!?

Don't just bitch here. Let them know. The lady I spoke to last night said they are well aware of it. They need those complaint numbers to hit their threshold.

My guess is that they've been watching for issues because of the howling complaints and that's how they noticed the recall leak.

I've had the 55mph howl since I first bought the truck. Already had the diff replaced and didn't seem to help at all. But I noticed that if I drive with the rear passenger side window down at 27mph, there's also a faint howl. Makes me think the issue is a harmonic/fundamental frequency of the vehicle. This isn't the LCA howl either. I already had the holes plugged. The 27 mph howl seems to be coming from the same location as the 55 mph howl. Any takers?

I do not think it can be a driveline angle issue. If it were it would do it from day 1 and it would not increase in volume and range.

Yeah, l guess that is possible too, but if you have a load in the bed would it not get louder? Something is definitely going on out back in some of these truck though.

I have only heard it once and it occurred when I had 4 adult passengers. Have not been able to duplicate yet.

This may sound strange but I had a family member in my truck who could NOT hear the noise at all while it was 100% noticeable to me while in the 52-56mph band. I wonder how many here are unable to pick up the 400hz pitch that its giving out?

Try sitting where they were sitting and see if it goes away. they may have been in a cancellation node (less common at higher frequencies), that or their hearing just isn't as acute as yours.

Everyone in the car heard the sound at the time but it would come and go. But it only has occurred once in the 4 months that I have had the Truck.

I don't know if my noise is getting louder or I'm getting more sensitive to it.

I can hear it from 40-60 now. Most distinctly at 54ish mph.

I'm trying to see if anyone else will notice it. I haven't had anyone comment on it yet.
