Yes -- they did that too--waste of $ and time--spent 3 hours with chassis ears [removed transfer case and drove ] before Toy authorized the new diff. Used a devise to measure the sound before and after. A diff howl is easy to diagnose...:burnrubber:.

Bad pinion bearing is the diagnosis.

    Replace diff is the "cure"

Should have all the parts in a week or so and then they'll need my truck for a couple of days for repair.

All in all I am impressed with Modesto Toyota they have been great so far and I hope for my and their sake this fix will be the Midas touch.

I got them to manually check the tranny and Check for the TSBs. Both were good.

Also all new diff fluid which is ok with me.

Yep -- they told me they don't know why they are failing and they will probably need to replace it again.

    Bummer.

At least I'm back in my truck!

Although I topped the Prius off after driving about 140 or so miles and dropping it off.

    2.1 gallons...

I hope yours is a permanent fix. I doubt it though. My replacement started up again fairly quickly iirc.

My guess is driveline angles, because people with lifts are reporting improvement after the lift.

Isn't it lovely? My wife's prius gets 55mpg average and is great on road trips. Too bad it's not the best looking car...

    Jumping in on this..
Started noticing this a couple hundred miles ago (at 3500+ now).

2017 Double cab short bed TRD/Off Road manual trans.

Just started hearing it so haven't been to the dealer yet. Any tips on what to say to them to get it addressed?

Just curious what speed you notice it at? When mine started it was right at 54 MPH but now the range is a little wider and goes up to about 60.

Noticed that if i crack the window or have them down, the wind noise is loud enough so I don't hear the howl.

Also noted, using the AC puts just enough draw on the engine that the howl can be heard without feathering the throttle when decelerating through the 60-54 mph range.

What was the determination on your diff howl? replace diff or not.

Bad pinion bearing. They're going to replace it once they can source all the parts. Apparently the diff gasket is hard to get right now

This is what I posted July of last year. If the new pinion bearing resolves the howling issue, please let us know.

They're just going to replace the whole diff. So it will have a new pinion bearing but who knows if it'll be any better set up than the one I have now.

    I hope so.

New 4.88 gears are smooth and quiet, but I only have like 450 miles on them. I had the install shop run a pattern check on the factory setup, and he said he couldn't exactly remember the pattern, but said it was acceptable.

    Right on.

Might be a bad batch of bearings.

    Thanks

Yup I've got it 2017 TRD OR DCSB slight howl at 60-62. Noticed it at 13 miles and have 1200 now. Will schedule my 5k service and tell them about the noise.
