My Tacoma has been making the same faint noise since new. The dealership checked out the issue at 10,000 miles and both the service writer and technician said they could not hear the noise. The odometer just passed 11,500 miles and I haven't noticed any change.

Just changed my vote from No to Yes. Heard it last week while I was actually driving 60mph. Its pretty annoying.

I have noticed that the howl on my truck is much quieter in the warm weather. I first noticed it last spring, it drove me nuts all summer but then got much louder over the winter. I assumed it was a degradation of what ever parts are causing it but now that it's warm again it is much quieter (about 50%). still very noticeable though. So perhaps temperature affects tolerances of some parts related to the howl. Strange that it doesn't quiet down even after hours of driving in the cool weather, you'd think everything in the diff having warmed up would make a difference.o_O

I'd go to a different dealer--it's a $2000 job. Most would want the warranty work.

I get it at exactly 47 mph, when backing off light throttle. It sounds like a jet airplane. I like it.

Hey there...I'm about where you are and willing to just take it to a shop and get it fixed. Was curious about what work you had done and costs?

    Just posting update -
Went in for my 5k service today and mentioned the rear end howl. VIN not under the recall. But they were fully aware of issue and there is a Service Bulletin out for it. They are ordering parts for me, will be in a few weeks. I'll keep everyone posted.
Dealer is Wilsonville Toyota if it matters.

So they are replacing parts simply because of the howl?

    Interesting....
Keep in mind manual transmission for my truck. Got this from the dealer today:

    IMG_20170616_100634.jpg

Not sure what a heat insulator A)is, and B) will do, but they are ordering parts and are going to call me when they come in.
Quote the service tech, plan for a 1 hour job.

Unlikely they are pulling the 3rd or doing any work inside of it.

    Will definitely keep everyone posted!!

Someone else here already had that done and it did not have any impact on the Howling from the Rear.

My gut check when I saw the write-up was this will not fix it... we'll see where this goes.

Is there another thread on it?

I think it was contained inside of another Thread, if memory serves it was a Thread where guys were trying to change to different types of rear lube in hopes that it would help stop the Howling.
