The sound is close in frequency. Wind provokes the LCA noise, and ring/pinion tooth mesh provokes the howl.

Oh I will. They can make this easy or it will get ugly fast. There will be a point (soon) where I won't post much about it for obvious reasons. ;)

In case anyone is wondering, the differential howl is the exact frequency of the ring and pinion tooth mesh. And one other thing... this noise could only be characteristic of a MIS-engineered or poorly assembled third member. This is NOT characteristic of a properly engineered and properly assembled third member, and thus, that response for our noisy differentials is Pathetic for Toyota.

Good luck getting Toyota to do a damn thing. Shitty engineering is "normal" . Just got off the phone with corporate yet again after moving higher up and they claim it is a "normal" characteristic of the vehicle and there is nothing they can do or will do. So I would be very interested if anyone actually get anything fixed. They seemed all sketchy about it. I'm so tired of Toyota they can f*ck themselves and I'll buy another vehicle and never a Toyota since they think they are such great engineers their product is infallible.

According to Toyota it is normal there is no fix nor has ever been considered an issue requiring a fix. So it is all lies

I'm going to open a case with the NHTSA since a noisy rear end is a rear end that is not.functioning property this could be a safety issue, and I feel it definitely could lead to unsafe wear and failure. I think everyone with this issue should respond to the NHTSA and hopefully we can get this resolved. I do not think a potentially unsafe condition should be dismissed by Toyota and I'm not provided any information other that it is "normal" with an extreme aversion to the issue o their part. They just shit it down and will only.state "normal" like they have a set script.

There have been a few people on here that had the rear seize up while they were driving, not a very safe thing to have happen.

Did you get a replacement differential before they called it normal?

Tell them that their response is not acceptable. Tell them to escalate your case. Keep escalating until you are satisfied. Most people are getting 125k Platinum warrantys for their bull sh!t.

Oh no they won't even look at it. It was even a quart low new and I added fluid since it started whining and I felt it was unsafe to drive like that. Their response was there is no proof it was low. I guess I should have driven 400 miles more with it low which may have been very unsafe. I don't know.what would be my motivation in lying I just want it fixed, I won't gain anything but a working truck, which is what I paid 35k for.

I want a solid engineered solution not some bullshit warranty I won't keep the truck.if they won't fix it for an issue that degrades the value, driveability, and potentially the safety of my vehicle. They will fix it. There is no.excuse for not being able.to.fix it. We have sent a Rover to Mars and a properly fuctioning rear end is out of the realm of human engineering.....hahaha

It appears that since Toyota cannot fix something virtually every other manufacturer has no issues with they are now going to try to spin the howling rear diff as a "normal characteristic of the vehicle " so it is more important now than ever to call them out and keep fighting. Remember that the corporate call center people are just minions reading from scripts (while recording every word you say) given to them by corporate lawyers. Make sure when you talk to them that you know what you are going to say before you call and don't give them an inch. Never accept what is unacceptable.

Wonder how many people's diffs are getting louder over time? I'm at 17k and mine's still the same. Possibly quieter. Or maybe I'm getting used to it.

You are getting used to it. Mine got louder from 1000 to 3000 miles and is now about the same. I track it with my radio volume because that's what p'd off OCD people do, right? If you want an absolute fix I have a solution but it will cost about $875. Just put the most aggressive mud tires on it you can find and keep the radio turned all the way up and it will never bother you again. I'm sure Toyota will try to shame us all into accepting it because we all should be hearing our exceptionally high quality radios playing our favorite song. Maybe they will release a TSB telling us to increase radio volume when driving between the speeds of 52-62mph. Bam - fixed!
