When I bought an assembled 3rd for my 4Runner the pinion bearing was included in the assembly.

Just a update and FYI. Called my dealer and scheduled a appointment for next Tuesday. I asked about the pinion bearing. They said they were going to change the "entire assembly" and that the pinion bearing was included as part of the assembly. The (FTS?) area service manager has not been involved in my case. The main Toyota service tech at my dealership has near 30 years experience with Toyota and has turned that job down, so maybe thats why. He seems to carry a lot of weight. He did proclaim I needed a new rear end assembly 1/2 mile into a 1 mile test drive and there wasn't any further discussion or approval as far as I know. I am beginning to hear noise now when NOT coasting at highway speeds. It's very faint but a little noticeable.

It's a work in progress. See my build thread.
I could be wrong, but I think this may be the first report of this happening on a Sport. I do remember Smitty said his sister's (?) SR5 had the issue. I guess that indicates that all (4WD) Taco's can be affected. Do the 2WD's have Limited Slip differentials?

This is also a 2014 Taco, so a gen 2, that we are talking about. So it might not be the exact same thing that we have.

Agreed. Just pointing out a commonality.
There are very few things that can make them howl anywhere from 0-15,000 miles, assuming it is the same problem.

Mine is at the dealership now for the 5000 mile service. Asked them to check howling noise and do the AT TSB. Will see how much actually gets done and how much I have to fight with them.

Mine is at dealership now for 5k service trans tsb and rer end whine too. When I checked it in they indicated that they had were aware of shifting issues and the tsb. I asked about the whine and the guy said he wasn't aware of anyone else reporting that. I informed the guy that my research had shown that it wasn't an isolated issue Should be hearing from the dealer in the next hour or so

I feel like it could be the most prolific issue plaguing a vehicle and the service writers will always say "this is the first time we've heard of that being an issue!"

Yep.....I fully expect to hear that they either couldn't hear anything or that's normal. I was just researching local rearend shops as I suspect I'll end up doing what someone else on here was planning is getting an independent diagnosis....before giving Toyota another show to address it.

Gonna wait it out and see how it goes for some of these guys on here. I like my truck so far. First Toyota. Have about 1600 miles right now. I will report the issue when I take it in for 5000 mile maintenance so at least it's documented. The more Toyota sees its a problem, the more likely we are to get it fixed.

The first thing they teach them in Service Advisor School: "Say it with me class, "This is the first time we've heard of this being a problem""
