I get it around 40-45 mph off throttle/partial throttle. Mine is a 2017 TRD Pro built in April 2017

I starting getting the howl, but if I hadn't I read about it here, I would have never noticed it. Does this get louder over time? Otherwise, I don't really care about it. I can't here over my music or when i have the windows down. No rear-seat passengers have ever complained about it either.

Unless this is causing damage, I don't think I will even go in to get it serviced if there is a TSB for it.

If you have to read about the howl on here to notice it, of coarse it's not loud enough to be a problem. The people that are complaining about it have a much louder howl. It's immediately noticeable. Anyone could hear it.

Also if it's bearable don't complain 'cause your second diff might be way worse... like mine.

I just had my 5K Mike service done. Geez, my truck smells like grease but I will save that gripe for another day. When I told them my rear diff was making a noise (didn't tell them about open case with corporate) they tried to keep my truck and I politely declined and got my service. I made an appointment to have the rear diff issue evaluated this Thursday. I suspect they will either say it is fine (tone deaf) or try to keep it. The advisor only thought the recalled ones made noise and acted genuinely concerned but we will see. I purposely avoided the dealer that was flagged to look at my truck so I could get hopefully an untainted set of eyes on it.

I'm very close to this point and already inquired about this type of work being done at a couple of local repair shops. I go in for my 15k service in about 2 months and if there is nothing definitive by then will take my truck to a repair shop. Hate to do this, but my whine is quite loud at 55-65mph. Otherwise the truck is great and for me there are no other midsize truck options that I'd consider.....don't trust the American options and don't want a fullsize truck. Expect a post from me here in a couple of months either with a Toyota fixed truck or details on repair from a shop.

I will decide between this option (repairing it myself) and Lemon Law. Honestly, I really like the truck so I may fix it myself depending on costs.

Yea like nDub my 2nd rear end is worse than the first. Its almost steady whine now between 50 and 65. Loud as shit when lifting or feathering gas. If you hardly notice it don't worry about it. I hear mine over stereo on vol 35.

Smitty, my guy today was nice but completely clueless. I plant to use his cluelessness to my advantage. He really thought that my rear diff could not and would not make a noise unless it was on the list so he said they needed to get mine taken care of ASAP. We will see when I go back but if I get one that is worse then my decision is simple. I either LL it right off or fix it myself.

I have a really good rear diff guy here locally so I'm thinking this is a viable option. The thing that is so shocking is that Toyota has absolutely ZERO gameplan here other than to say it is normal or that they have no idea what is wrong. You cannot say something is a normal characteristic if half of the other vehicles don't do it. I'm hoping for a fix but like you and so many others, I will believe it when I see it.

I am curious for the 18s to come out to see if they howl, have a theory that they maybe redesigned the gear set and that is 1 of the reasons they are running behind schedule.

Just a theory as they have to be aware of this issue by this point and it is costing them big bucks in warranty claims, seems like they would do a redesign.

I agree. At this point it does them no good to bury their head in the sand. But, GM is doing that as we speak on every fullsize SUV they make with the vibration, V4 to 8 droning, and cabin pressure. They have no clue and or fix so they give the old normal characteristic of the vehicle speech unless you fight them. I hope Toyota won't do this. I think with the Jeep and Ford about to drop they know they need to get their crap together and I'm hopeful they will.

I found a driveline shop near me, but when I went in the owner was a bit of a tool.

I walk I'm after stumbling onto it while driving by. No one is at the front desk. I wait for about 2-3 minutes then poke my head into the garage area. One of the employees is really nice and says I need to talk to their boss who just went to lunch.

The guy was pulling in right at that moment. Walks in, right past me, sets something on his desk, walks right back past me, into the back office and shuts the door. The employee, who sees that, goes back and lets him know I'm here to speak to him.

4 minutes later he comes back out and goes to his desk--not acknowledging my presence. His employee explains my situation and without talking to me, as if I wasn't their, proceeds to tell his employee that the truck has to be under warranty and that it wouldn't make sense to look at it.

I interject into this weird convo and say I'm at the point where I want someone to tell me what's wrong because Toyota is telling howling is normal. He seemed irritated by my presence and huffs "well if you bring it in I could take a look but I can't do anything until I see it" or something along those lines.

At that point I was irritated and said yea sure later. The reviews I read we're 50/50. A few call him out specifically. I guess he doesn't care much about his reputation bc he obviously hasn't changed at all.

All that to say..back to the drawing board. Need to find another one that's worth a damn.

Good luck moon. Maybe you will get a good one. If not maybe the rear end shop can figure out what's going on with them.
