My 2016 Tacoma SR5 purchased in April of 2016 experienced the same whine. I can not remember when I first began to notice it, but it became progressively worse as time went on. I also had the seepage. I first took the truck in for the recall in May of 2017 and they performed a torque of the nuts and sent me on my way. Late June I checked the differential again and noticed seepage. I took the Tacoma in again but to a different dealer. I showed the service mgr. the photos of the seepage and decided also to address the whine. Explaining to him that the whine was consistent with a problem with the ring and pinion. I asked to meet with the Master Tech and suggested that they put the Tacoma on a lift and listen for the whine. The tech did so and diagnosed the problem as the ring and pinion miss aligned in the rear differential assembly. They proceeded to order the rear differential assembly. They held the Tacoma until late July at which time they replaced the rear differential assembly. I am now 1400 miles into the new assembly and have no whine to report or seepage. I will continue to check and listen for any whine or seepage as others that have had their differential replaced have reported a return of the whine. Hopefully this one won't. I am not completely convinced there isn't an engineering problem or design issue with the rear end. We will see.

Can you provide documentation of the service report? That would greatly help us. Just blur out personal information.

I/we need something more credible than " I read online ". That would be outstanding to be armed with that.

To the others. My plan was to drop it off at Toyota today and do a test drive with a tech. I only considered the other shop when it seemed like I was encountering the " round around". The Toyota centric shop is located in San Diego, CA. My initial plan was for a diagnosis. I briefed them on my situation they estimated it would cost $ 99.00.

Not sure about wanting then to tear it all down. That wasn't my intent. I wanted them verify the noise is present under the conditions I stated. Doing that may cause me to void my warranty.

20170914_140334[1].jpg Sorry about the image being difficult to read from posted angle. Not sure as to why they decided to state on work order no leaks found at this time. There was seepage, but I was satisfied with the repair and the dealership was in my corner, so why rock the boat over some sentence. I had use of a 2017 Offroad for the entire time. Couldn't have received better service.

Excellent! Anyway you could do the whole document? Showing the dealership name but just blur out your name, include vehicle information.

The icing on the cake would be a pdf document.

why is it a big secret to tell us what exactly is the problem that you have found, you say it was verified by you? or an expert?

    It's a fair question.

@The Real Moondog what was done to diagnose the issue and what were the findings?

I had my truck at the Toyota dealer with a finding for the noise but no cause as of yet. It's a "we hear it" but no dice on what it is.

Edit: To add to this I also got a "bring it back in and leave it for a day or two" and we will try to figure it out. I'm down for that and will as soon as my wife is through her surgery issues. I do not care what it is so long as it is fixed or even masked so long as it is not dangerous.

Mine was diagnosed as a bad pinion bearing.

Got a new diff that made the same exact sound.

Toyota engineer said it was a characteristic of the vehicle.

So bad pinion bearing=characteristic of vehicle :notsure:

Unless my guy was a professional actor he seemed genuinely surprised at my issue and equally clueless about the cause. We will see hopefully soon.

    Ok update guys!

I took my truck to the dealership. I was lucky they paired me up with a "no bs" old school tech, actually really cool guy. We hit it off. Went on my test drive and he confirmed the sound as the rear differential. Before we even went out, he looked under the truck and said " its the model with the magnetic clutch in the rear differential. That's probably what your hearing". I took him on the test drive and right away without denying it around 50-54, particularly 54 MPH.. He acknowledged right away. He says he's seen this before. But has his " theories" about the cause. He said that Toyota may release a TSB/fix he personally said that might try and add " sound dampening" material inside. But he himself is really unsure of how they're going to handle this. Me and him are of the opinion that they created a faulty differential but can't and dont know how to fix it without replacing thousands, if not hundreds of thousands differentials...

So he put in a order with corporate personally and will contact me. He seemed genuine with his efforts to try to help me. He was telling me about all the issues with the differential recall gaskets he's done. Seemed like a straight shooter with a big "FU corporate attitude."

From the past two trucks I've had. Both identical TRDOR's it seemed like in the beginning there was virtually no differential noise. But after 500 mile mark, after the gears are allegedly broken in, it seems like that is last chance to change out the fluid before this happens. Mine was BLACK at 1200 miles now. A few members told me on here " its a waste to change it so soon". But the result of both my trucks is identical...

The tech's theories stem from a noisy magnetic clutch, to poor construction metals of the differential gears and or alignment.

That is interesting. The taco I had started howling at 1200 miles, so this info is even more interesting. I really hope they do get this fixed soon.
