He's no more a troll than I am.

There's a way to handle this and a way not to handle it. I'm not discounting that the noise bothers some people, but I'd also point out that the issue is intergenerational and separate from the lubrication issue.

This thread helps people when it deals with facts not torch lighting and pitchfork sharpening. Look at the history of these trucks, separate fact from fiction, identify the problem and do so without alienating people who may be trying to bring a different perspective or knowledge to the table.

People in the second gen threads reported the noise but very few failures have been noted. Why is that? Why - despite the tsb covering literally every year of the second gen - were no widespread failures reported?

My noise is coming in over my radio with my radio turned up to volume level 35. No head under a blanket needed. Talking about lawyering up is not big talk. Lawyering up should not be needed if Toyota would just pony up and fix the issue. But, if I have to lawyer up all I have to do is look in the mirror. I have been practicing for 21 years now but there are many that may have to get legal help if Toyota doesn’t fix something they should acknowledge and fix. I, like many others, am on this forum because I’m a truck enthusiast first and foremost. I am also on here trying to find a fix because I’d like to keep my truck but I’d also like to have a truck that is not driving me crazy with a loud howling nose that interferes with my enjoyment of the vehicle. Keeping each other informed seems to be what I am seeing here. Yes, many of us are venting too because it is frustrating. Happy reading to all....

Seriously? You don't have the howl and you've decided that everyone that does is exaggerating? OK.....o_O.

The service manager went for a ride along. He said "oh , that is not right"
And he said the field rep was coming in to hear it

    I guess you can't read!!!'
In THE MAJOR METRO AREA OF MILWAUKEE, ZERO REPORTS OF THIS ISSUE AT 6 DEALERS. All of them claimed no one else besides me had a issue. That's what I was ranting about . In 2 yrs of Toyota pulling their puds no one from Kenosha to the north side of Milwaukee had this issue? That's what I'm calling bull shit on. They had these issues come in. Is Toyota just dealing one on one? Or... am I just the luckiest person ever to have a major issue with a brand new vehicle. I mean "the only one"

Thanks. It's loud enough to hear it over the radio. I'm a huge Toyota truck person. I don't want to lawyer up. I just want Toyota to fix it! If they can't , I'll get a lawyer and have them buy it back

The noise is well documented in the Second Gen Tacomas as well as the process for addressing it. Maybe if you brought them the TSB that shows that every model year 2nd get was affected by this noise to the point where they issued a TSB - they may change their tune............I've attached the TSB for anyone who wants it.

I dunno. Probably seen an actual bad pinion before. They actually howl.

I'll worry when my truck sounds like that.

The noise itself is a real problem.

If it's being damaged it's a worse problem, but if not...it's still a real problem. It needs to be addressed by Toyota.

To bad you don't bring insights we need. Look a real Toyota mechanic!!!!
Any solution for my problem when the stereo is turned up at halfway and can still hear the sound. Does your dealer give customers the run around where they felt like Toyota is sticking it up our rear ends? (Pun intended)
I know wrench turners also! My neighbor. 30+ years ...plus he can fix a skid loader to a helicopter. He even said he's never seen a manufacturer drag its ass like Toyota is doing. I can bring it to a transmission place I trust but if they open it up and find something can I then go to Toyota and make them pay for it? Or will Toyota refer to there "well they opened it up "

I would think a Toyota mechanic or even the Toyota engineers that come to the site can give us insight and help. Instead we (me) are told by crusty mechanics ,
"You are idiots and don't know what's the difference between a little howling noise and a stripped diff!"
    Thanks for the help.
Any solutions you can give besides sarcasm? Some just do their job because it's a check. Some do it because they love it and have a passion for it(the fixing and problems solving side) I'm hoping to find a Toyota mechanic willing to help all of us ... not just call me dumb.
Guess I'm gonna be on the naughty list and get blocked . lol

That TSB doesn't help. I've had my diff replaced and the new one is just as bad if not worse. Toyota has also made it very clear they won't throw parts at my truck hoping the noise will go away. That is what is frustrating me.

Part of me is glad but also sad. Seriously! He's a Toyota mechanic. I'm a idiot.. I joined Tacoma World to find the best products, find and Learn all the flaws, maybe find a truck rally, bit in general, it was to show off the thing I love the most... my Trd sport. I know mechanics and service advisors, service managers, porters, all the way up to people in corporate at Toyota are on here. We need them. I'm an idiot. Yes! I need things broken down for me ! If someone needs to know the angles for a fixed pitch prop on a Cessna 182 or the calendar time on A J-41 I'll help you. The speed a 3 blade MT propeller makes or the service number to the McCauley propeller factory in Ohio, I can help.Howling from the rear end of my Tacoma is not my strong suit. Any top Toyota brass on here with the answers to why this isn't fixed would be most appreciated. Thanks 98tacoma/moderator for having my back. Truly I thought I was going to be banned.
It's ok I can take a ribbing. I just been so frustrated with Toyota in general. It's been months of phone calls to the 800#, dealers telling me there's nothing they can do till the recall comes out on the diff leak. To dealers telling me they found nothing wrong after having my truck for 12 hours. Trying to find a ride to and from the dealer. Explaining to my job I'll be running late because service opens at 7 and I'm dropping off my truck again. They always joke..."didn't you buy a new truck so you didn't need to drive a beater anymore " lol!!! Call back to the dealer and talk to the service manager on why it hasn't been fixed! The most irritating thing is the "it's a normal noise"..., news flash... it's not normal. This has been like a second job for 6 months now!!!The Toyota brand for me was always top of the food chain. I drove beaters and other crap new cars like a Kia Rio just to get to a-b. I can't tell you how great it was the day I bought my 2015. How great it was to drive a Toyota again. Then 2 yrs later I got the truck I wanted the 2017 Trd sport. I now feel deflated. Mostly I feel Toyota let me down . I'm not sure if it's that or my high expectations of Toyota quality.

I see this guy is banned but shoots I didn't get to respond...

If you don't have the howl then don't worry about it. I've driven/worked on a lot of vehicle with similar set ups and this howl is different and not normal. In fact when I took it to Toyota they diagnosed it as a bad pinion bearing and replaced my diff.

So a Toyota master mechanic with experience and training with Toyota's diagnosed it as a bad pinon bearing.

Something is goofy and I'm waiting for Toyota to own up to it. I have an open case with corporate.

Regardless of all your posturing, don't discount peoples experience just because they don't jive with yours.

Again , I didn't want him banned. I wanted that guy to explain what it could be or this is what I believe it could be... He turns wrenches at a Toyota dealer he must hear or seen several of these. If not he has been in these chat rooms and he could go back to work and talk to coworkers about it and get their ideas or theories! We need answers. We need techs knowledgeable in this.Just want "Toyota experts" to tell me the solution.

IMG_7482.jpgAt My job I have passion for what I do. I'm not there just to get a pay check. I love to problem solve and enjoy helping. Oh, and I get paid. Im sure plenty of people in the Toyota family (service, managers, etc) are passionate about helping Toyota owners. I gotta believe that. It's why I bought my 1st Toyota truck in 1989 and knew what a solid brand it was and missed till I bought another.

I think it's hilarious that he posted a complete failed differential as an example of a " serious problem".

Ours shoulda never have to fail and lock up on us for Tacoma owners to showcase our issues. Maybe he's a " good mechanic" but I cannot imagine him interacting with customers.

To me if a truck with 500 to 1200 springs up a differential howl/whine and the fluid is black and the rear end is already suspect to begin with i call that a " problem".

Imagine if the auto industry was like the aviation. If a fleet of 737s had faulty bearings in their landing gear that whole fleet would be grounded until the exact cause was identified. The auto industry is not held to the same standard. There is no FAA or NTSB.

Toyota does a great job of concealing issues from NHTSA.
