Seriously though, what I am actually hoping is that something more definitive will come out of the cases that are farther along than mine here and I can take that back to them if or when the noise gets louder.

It appears it is on their radar. That's a sign of hope. I'd expect within the next 6 months we might even see a TSB on this issue. It certainly won't be a recall without catastrophic failure and safety issues but a TSB to address those who complain of the symptoms would be the right move IMO.

I think Toyota will hear a lot more of this as people take their trucks in for scheduled maintenance. I know that's when they'll hear from me.

I have this "hum" issue on my '16 TRD. After pushing the service manager to open a case with Toyota he finally did. They had my truck for 2 weeks and Toyota sent engineers out from California and Michigan to investigate. They finally replaced my diff with a new one which they told me is version 2 (original was version 1). They said there may still be a hum - which there is - and that Toyota is working on version 3 of the rear diff. No idea when ver 3 is coming out, though.

I had my diff replaced and the issue is no different. It sounds like it may be getting worse as of late, but I can't tell.

On another note, when I called back, I asked them to go ahead and do the 1st oil change before I picked it up since I had a little over 6000 miles on it. When I picked it up, there was a sheet from the oil change crew checking off all of their inspection items. One was tire pressure. A few weeks ago, I had dropped the pressure in all 4 tires down to 30-31 (door sticker says 30 in all 4 tires), down from the 34 I had been running them. When I looked at the sheet, they had marked in 35 psi for all four tires. Curious about that, I switched the display over to tire pressure...and all four were reading 42 psi. I let it sit overnight and checked them again cold (or as close to cold as they will get overnight in Houston in August) using a hand gauge. Still 41 psi.

Why on earth would authorized technicians at a Toyota dealer be overinflating tires above Toyota's own recommendation by 10+psi? I plan to bring it up with the service manager, but am I missing something? Seems like a dangerous thing to do for them from a liability standpoint. And then why record that they filled them 7psi lower on the check sheet?

many years ago as a teenager I remember watching a gas station mechanic pour sawdust into a rear end to make it quiet. He just probably wound up making greasy mulch. Crazy home grown remedy that someone probably thought up in order to sell that used clunker off the used car lot.

Toyota does the same with mine when it's serviced. I was keeping my tires at 31 psi and they are always 35-36 psi after services. The pressure gauge in my truck is off by about 1-2 psi; it will read 37-38 psi. I always check them manually when cold, and the gauge/tires have always been off.

    Bull shit! Get the plugs!
There is a TSB (plugs) for the lca. Slight squeak will get worse...caused by improperly installed front (passenger side) bushing. Mine got progressively worse. Dealer replaced front bushings at 7800 miles and all quiet now. As you posted "hoping my diff doesn't decide to take a dump"...ditto here.

I totally buy them selling that line of BS, but I wouldn't accept it as the truth unless the part numbers changed.

It's not typical practice to change part numbers. If the piece still fits on the truck, chances are it maintains the same part number, just a new revision.

If you change part numbers, you have to go through every design drawing, document, etc etc that references that part number and change it. If you just change revision numbers it is a lot less work because usually revision letters/numbers don't end up on drawings, bill of materials, repair manuals etc.

I work in a car factory and you can tell how many times a part has been updated by the number near the end of the part. For example 01 is the first version. 08 changed 8 times. assuming yota and Honda are fairly similar.

Blue tape all over my truck...
"Do not wash" on the steering wheel.
"Do not fill" on the washer fluid.
    Tape on the radio controls...

Bastards never touch the tires though.
