I’m getting mine back to the shop next week. If it doesn’t get fixed or if they replace it and it does it again then I’m going to be the one to take the dive and get an Indy shop to fix it. What good is a warranty on a perpetually bad part anyway? The only part of the warranty it will void will be the rear diff and if the Indy shop backs their work then I don’t care. I have no issues whatsoever with my truck EXCEPT for the howling noise. I love it and want to keep it but can’t unless that stupid noise is gone. If that gets fixed I’m good to go and it may be worth dropping some coin to have it done right.

Oceanside, CA. Near MCB Pendleton. Not exactly a glorious website. Thats the charm of it though.

I'd like to see exactly how that would VOID the warranty if it is done by a shop with more experience than Toyota tech's themselves. I would assume since they are specialists in drive-line components. How could they not be possibly qualified to inspect for issues while not voiding the warranty.

    Seriously.

I'd send Toyota the bill just to spite them(not expecting them to pay).

He the service manager there, said they have 2nd Gen's that come in for carrier bearing replacements/drive-line issues every month ha. As I pulled up, there was at least a few sitting in their lot. They know whats up. They were just rolling their eyes at Toyota. They thought they'd get their act together..

I showed this thread and his eyes lit up in the prospect of future income haha

I think having a new one put in by another shop would definitely void it in my opinion. Having them check it out would not.

If I have to have this done elsewhere it might end up costing them but I’m more interested in getting this fixed. Another option with the crazy resale value these trucks have is selling what we have and buying an 18 if they get this issue fixed. I have to wonder why Toyota is suddenly looking at late December now for the 18s to be released. Maybe they are actually going to fix this issue with a better design.

I think a better question would be: how would Toyota ever find out it was replaced?? Everything should look the same on the outside. They've proven they don't crack em open. They just replace them. The odds anyone ever finds out it was replaced would be slim imo.

I'm sure the field service techs have reported the info back to Toyota HQ. They must have an idea of whats going on. But then again this has been occurring since 2005-15 with TSB-0057-13. Now the 3rd gen. The only difference is their " officially" denying it out of covering it for warranty claims. " Theres no TSB's on the 2016-17" Yeah... Yeah.. How about TSB-0057-13? Does that ring a bell?

They either know or just know and dont care...

I’m all for them not knowing as well. The bigger question is how many of us have actually ever had a rear diff fail? I had one as a kid over 25 years ago but that was on an old beater. If it gets fixed chances are it will never be an issue again.

They wouldn't ha. They're so much into peny pinching that would COST THEM. As we all know they ain't exactly into wasting money they dont have.. Long as all the pen markings from the factory matched up. They wouldn't have a clue..

I found it disgusting that they allow for 1.5 hours for a tech to replace the rear diff. Seriously? They must have a lot of confidence in those techs or they thinking they should donate a few hours out of good will.

I'll buy you a six pack of your favorite beer if you are right.

But they haven't fixed a bunch of things with this brand. Some of which is decades old.

I know. I really do but geez surely they will fix this. But, if not then I’ve got to figure out what I what to do. LL, fix it myself, or just sell it and move on. My issue with selling it is like so many others on here I really like it. I also don’t like anything else out there enough to buy it. I’m not sure about the upcoming Ranger so that could be an option but I’d prefer a quiet non howling Taco. Either way this sucks.

So are you going to let them take yours apart. I'll chip in for exploratory work. I know a bunch of us will.

I'm dead serious. Just ask them to detail the issue clearly, with pics (or videos), so we can all benefit. I know guys that live near by might even give them business if they fix it.

The dealer has one more chance to repair or I'll look for a local shop. But... I live in Michigan. Land of the big 3, not many taco experts here, but plenty of Jeep shops, they should be able to help.

I'm just seeing this thread now so only read the first two, and newest pages, but I just clocked 20K in my 16 dcsb mt or and the whine hasn't gotten worse since I noticed it at 500 miles or so. FWIW.

    I'll be following...
