Why is it so hard to believe? Did you forget the frame rust issue? TSB0057-13 is proof that this has been going on.

Toyota has a long history of this.

Exactly, if month after month sales show you as the leading manufacturer, then what's the rush?

Eventually they will have to do something (hopefully), but they've got time on their side since there doesn't seem to be a massive worldwide outcry over the issue nor much competition in the market.

I’m starting to think we have a Toyota rep or two on this thread. ;)

Watch out. They'll come in and call you a Ford rep that's just sewing seeds of dissent.

Trying to fill in some gaps... I have a 17 pro, 14.25k miles.
I THINK I've heard it once, about 6 weeks ago.
Accelerating from a stop at a light for about 20-30 feet for a 2 second duration, on a very slight incline at best. (no coasting)
    I've not heard it since.
It was a 'what is that? was that my truck?' kind of moments. Sounded like a metal squeal kind of thing.

I remember the TRD news packs back in Feb 16 - "TRD-tuned rear suspension with progressive-rate off-road leaf spring"
I 'believe' the PRO leafs on the back are different to an Off Road, but someone better suited can confirm if the part numbers are the same or not.

Thank you, this helps quite a bit. If it was the howl, you’d know. It’s replicable as most people can make it happen here on command. Otherwise, the Pro is the same sans suspension, yieding a 1” lift, exhaust and cosmetic stuff. Hmmmm...

I know the negative Nellies here get all salty when I say this, but it sounds like it’s something else and not necessarily quality issues, a design flaw sounds more like the culprit that generates a sound vibration over a failing part...

Flame suit on... call me a Toyota rep, blah blah blah...

    Hmmm...

Appreciate the help... and Viva La Figa Vale46

In response to Berto. It is a 6 speed automatic. Went for a long ride, (about 2 hours in length) and when I started to coast a little down hill it was quite loud but since then not very noticeable. Only happened between 55 and 60 mph.

Another independent shop today on our test drive told me he's pretty confident in the contact pattern.

    1) Not setup correctly, with the coast side of the pinnion depth.

    2) Could be inferior metals, as Toyota could be trying to save money by using the cheapest contractor. He said auto manufactures bid on parts from suppliers.

He said typically OEM gearset should not make any noise if setup properly. As they come prelapped.

Had the rear differential replaced by the dealer yesterday due to howling. Got a call to pick it up and they informed that the job was complete and come and get the truck BUT the noise is still there. Dealer stated they were in contact with TOYOTA and their SUPER Technician and this was a problem being experienced by a large number of Tacoma owners.(I tried to tell them this but the service manager stated I should not believe everything I read on the internet) Further stated it was OK to drive it in this condition until they figure out what the remedy will be. They have my phone number and when a solution if finalized they will call me. I just wanted it in the system in case something drastic happens on my upcoming trip to St Louis.

I believe what you heard was different. I experienced that on my truck several times when accelerating hard up a slight incline (usually a freeway on ramp). I don't know what it was, but it sounded more like a brief metallic ringing and came from the engine bay.

The howl from the diff is at light throttle, loudest at highway speed range and unmistakably comes from behind your head.

Makes you wonder if they even replaced it? Or all of them are defective/ not being installed correctly.

The fact they told you stay off the internet means they're trying to down play it.

Wait so if I stay off the internet my howl will go away?

I’m willing to give it a try if that’s Toyota’s solution.

Just picked my 2017 DCSB OR MT up from the ship today. Spent 36 days mostly waiting for the differential and gasket to come in.
Was told this differential is a new part number from the 2018 trucks and is the remedy to the howling.
So far, no howl. I will confirm on my commute home.

    Ok,
I've been documenting my rear diff issues starting at 3000 miles. Now at 15000, my dealer determand that I is the therd mender and is ordering the parts. I'm just glad that they didn't give me the " it's normal" speel. Let's see if this one works.

Can you get the part number from your dealer for the rest of us?

    Thanks.

Not only do I have the howl after my rear diff was replaced but my transmission feels like it's slipping. While moderately accelerating up a slight incline I can feel the truck studdering ever so slightly between 30-40mph. What the hell is that.
