Welp....got my truck back after the field engineer had it the whole day. Checked all my fluids, checked my wheel bearing, checked my drive shaft, road tested truck and thought it might be a smidge out of alignment so got an alignment, got the new trans update, got my 5k service, and it all boiled down to "Toyota says this is a normal operating condition....for the time being."

The field engineer has all of my personal info, and more or less said I would hear from him and the dealership if a fix is found.... So I have hit the end of the road for now... Ugh, not what I hoped, but what I expected. Hopefully we will get a TSB within a couple months for this nonsense.

This sucks....I wanna put my new wheels on, but this has delayed me. May just do it anyways.

Took my truck back for the 10k service plus transmission update and told them about the whine coming from the read dif. They wanted to keep my truck for 2 days to troubleshoot and told me they don't offer a loaner vehicle. I opened a case with Toyota and told them that the dealer told me they wouldn't give me a loaner and a few days later I get a call saying they have a loaner lined up for me. Leave my truck overnight and got news today that I will be getting a new differential. Picking my truck up tomorrow to drive until they get the parts.

Every time that I hear someone else gets a new rear diff, my heart sinks a little more....

You let me down MasterPenguins, I was hoping you would have gotten a different outcome, although I'm not sure what it would have been! At least they got everything else taken care of for you, and hopefully you'll be one of the first in line if they do come up with a fix.

I have an appointment tomorrow to get the trans TSB and have my howling 2nd diff documented. Haven't decided if I should push them to pursue the noise again, or just ask them to document it for Corporate record.

I usually set tacomas to 35. The 29 they recommend is good for ride quality but when they put those horrible grand trek tires on them they would wear the edges off in 15000 miles. Running them at 35 made them wear alot better. Cant say why they would go so high and right something different other than their gauge being off.

Yeah, I am pretty bummed out right now, but just as you said, I have no idea what else would have happened... Guess we just have to wait for Toyota to hopefully figure out what is going on. Unfortunately there isn't really anything else I can push for. At this point I guess I will just make sure it doesn't get louder, and if it does I will bring it up again. All I want is to know this is good so I can put these damn wheels that are sitting in storage on! :annoyed:

I guess it is time to pass the torch to @smitty99 who I believe is next inline to get his second diff looked at....

Don't let that disappoint you. I just drove back from the dealership after getting a replacement differential. The new one is at least as loud as the first.

Replacing these noisy differentials won't help. They seem to all have the same problem.

I'll consider it, but the thought of having to call corporate again is just awful..... but the TRD Pro Skid Plate is calling my name!

That is true. I still honestly believe that Toyota will eventually get us squared away! I just spend all week being so optimistic about the Field Engineer looking at my second bad diff, and having good news of some sort......and now that I got the info and it wasn't as I hoped, I am temporarily demoralized :rain:

I would put them on. It's been well documented at this point that you were having issues with the stock setup. Plus they have told you that it's "normal".

I have been talking to my service adviser about it for a while, and he and I both agreed it would be good to wait a couple months to see if we hear anything before pulling the trigger right now. Then he said "After that let's do it! Hold on to the stock wheels, and if something happens we will throw the stock wheels back on." At least the guys at my dealership are cool and good to me

Anyone heard if the 2017s howl? They probably haven't been out long enough yet. Got to be a fix for this. I've never owned a truck with diff problems. Saw many vehicles go 300000 miles or more with nothing done to the diff.

The cynic in me hopes that they do...then we will get a fix faster!

But seriously I hope they don't have to go through this too. My guess is that they will have it since they all still have the LCA holes, indicating Toyota didn't really change anything.

If the 17s had an upgraded part that didn't howl, they would have put it in my 16 today. There's no fix yet.

I cast a "no" vote FOR NOW! But, after reading all these posts, I'm just waiting for the "shoe to drop" relative to the differential. I have had the struck since 12/15 (built 11/15 TX) and now have 8500 miles on it. As I have posted before, I have had all the minor fixes and TSB's done to date that have been reported on TW (great service writer/tech). I am about 35 miles from the dealership but it is on my to another home we have and I'll stop by and see what the tech says regarding this issue. I know he will do what is being done for others if mine starts the howling as many have denoted starts around 8-9K miles. Maybe by then there will be a "fix" that solves the problem.

As "bassman177" wrote: "I believe I had rather wait a while, and I hate the roar, rather than see some bozo put another diff in that made the same noise or worse, hoping they will come up with a fix. What a mess."

Totally agree with you. Nobody should have to fight to get something fixed. Thankfully my service adviser, and everyone for that matter, at my dealership has been great and easy to work with from day one! Can't really compare to anywhere else, as this is my first new vehicle, so I have never had to deal with this stuff before.
