Correct. But the origin of our differentials is from the same company. Obviously they're having QC control issues.

Leaks, shoddy gaskets. Howling differentials. All the same shit show.. Not just us, but the Tundra guys too.

Offroad 4runner. I wanted to stray from Toyota but I only like smaller 4x4s. The Wrangler although beyond awesome is hard to travel long distance in.

Nice man. I only test drove the SR5 4x4. They didn't have a offroad. But I noticed the SR5 had really spongy suspension.

Yeah I think the OR suspension is stiffer. I'll probably do 5100s up front

There hasn't been widespread issues of these rear ends grenading, so until Toyota finds a permanent solution, I wouldn't sweat it.

They are aware, and if something does break, it's all been documented, even if it's out of warranty.

Drive our trucks, and enjoy the good things about them. If the howl is bothersome, which it is to me and others, just enjoy the music a little more louder ;)

They are sweet looking trucks. I personally had some other things that were hard to get past. Mainly the lack of low end torque. I think it depends on where you live. When I'm in the country the truck is awesome, but the constant acceleration and deceleration of the city made the truck for me a bit of a chore to drive. Mine had alot of weird quirks like pulsating power at full throttle, lugging, pinging, seat pop, rear end whine, and it would try to stall randomly. All of which were deemed normal. I assume that all of these trucks perform much better than mine did. I decided to play it safe and get a runner. They hold value and it will get the job done. I really do hope Toyota fixes this stuff for all of the people experiencing it.

I hear you. Definitely bothersome, is a good way to put it.

Either way, since the majority of owners are happy (the 150,000+/- others per year, not on TW) statistics will be status quo. Great resale, reliability, etc.

Toyota will still continue to crush the midsize competition.

Replaced my rear diff [same howl as the Taco] in my 16-4R in March 2017. Replaced my front diff 8 months ago. The front diff has failed again. Going to get it checked out.

Just Installed an all pro leaf pack and changed the rear diff fluid. Went from howling since new to silent. Was also shocked by how good my rear diff fluid looked for so much speculation of potential failure/poor setup. Expected to find significant amounts of metal.

Are they a lift pack? Also did you go to a bigger tire?

My truck has the howling differential. It has effected my ability to cruise on the highway. My truck seems to struggle without 3k + RPMs. I don't know if just changing leafs would help.

To confirm, you got bigger tires and that didn’t change the howl, but the Standard All Pro leaf 10 pack got rid of the howl? That’s a $500 fix... many of us willing to do that here I’d think.

Thats interesting. I have a few theories now

    1) Maybe the driveline angle is improper is put a strain on the pinnion bearing on the differential causing them to prematurely wear out/fail. To me if its making noise that= damage component. Changing the leafs could just be masking it.?

    2) Improper gearset setup on the differential.

    3) the Drive angle is causing a harmonic at those speeds and loads, the leaf pack changed that.

Mine only howls at light load, (throttle feather), and between 63-65 mph. A failing part would do that at other ranges. I’m still thinking it’s a harmonic issue somewhere. The lifts have eliminated howls according to some. Keep in mind, that maybe, just maybe, some could be having other issues that MAY be premature wear, but my oil was clean and no shavings when I changed it twice...
