Traded my taco for a Z71 Colorado and loving it I do miss my Toco but I don't miss the howling rear end and the transmission

Good luck, it's seems to be hit or miss. Hopefully the new one will at least be less noisy.

    Ok
Picked the truck up yesterday and I must say It feels like I have a new truck. The drivetrain slop is gon. The wine at 55 gon and shifting is smooth as butter compared to how chunky it was befor.
Now I know I have a break in period but for now, all is good.
My tech took me back to look at the old unit and explained that the lash was esesive. The pointed out wher the third member was not aligned or flush with the bigger gear.
He wanted to rebuild my diff himself but Toyota wanted to just replace the whole unit.
I’ll give a new updat after break in.

So what was his opinion on the one he put in in terms of lash and alignment?

That's awesome to hear, hopefully after break in the noise does not return.

He checked the backlash and is confident that its set To speck.
He cantacted Toyota after my last complaint and told them that the noise was not normal and that he didn’t need to drive another truck to conferm it.
To be honest, I wish he would rebuild it himself. He seems to be a standup guy and knows his shit. Let’s see how the crush bearing sets over break-in.
    Im optimistic.

    :fingerscrossed:

Happy it seems to be working out for you! Keep us updated.

For frame of refrence, my second diff has been worse (than my first) from mile zero. It’s a characteristic of the double cab long bed though, according to my regional Toyota engineer.

Honestly this howl is the only thing that really bothers me. I have the clunk at a stopping, rattle in the cab, hissing air noise in the cab, goofy shifting etc etc. all of which I can live with.

The howl on the other hand is at exactly the speed I drove to and from work everyday. :frusty:

I haven't waded through all 177 pages of this thread, so if the following is already contained therein, well, disregard this post.
Anyhow, someone mentioned in another thread that there is a TSB addressing a whine in the 6 speed manual transmissions. It is TSB T-SB-0186-17, titled High Pitch Whine Noise from Manual Transmission, issued in Feb '17.

That TSB is for a transmission shield---however the whine associated in this thread is coming from the rear diff. IIRC, that TSB states that the noise happens in 5th/6th gear, but our howling diff also happens in 3rd and 4th also, just not common to be running 55-65 mph in 3rd and 4th gear...

Correct; that TSB is for a heat insulator on the MT. The member who posted it said when he had it applied, there was a noticeable reduction in sound level. I just threw it out here because not all of the posts that I've read seem to be talking about that same noise, or the source thereof.

Last week I was going about 70mph, pushed the clutch in and shifted into neutral to coast and the Howling came on from about 60 down to 50, agree that it's not in the transmission.

Get an off road 4runner I did it and I'll never look back. The low end power compared to the truck is amazing. Plus it's quiet! An underpowered whining rear end truck that hesitates and tries to stall was useless for me haha.

I just bout an 18 off-road for 35k. The 4runner is awesome to drive and has a manual 4x4 lever.

One of my favorite options in the 4R is the power seats. Very comfortable.

@Mountainmike87 Can you let me know if you feel a grinding vibration in between 25-40 MPH that goes away in 4WD. You will only notice this in low temps - 35 F. Thanks

Took my pro into the dealer, 11k miles on it, I can hear my diff whine over my radio now. I had to go out of town to Colorado, so I left the truck there for 4 days, and they said they would replace the diff for me. I call today, Monday, to check on the status of my truck. And they inform me that the technician couldn't hear the noise so nothing was done.. nothing... 4 EFFING days go by, and they cant even call me to say they didn't hear a noise, or ask me any more about it. No word from them whatsoever. I'm waiting for them to call me back after driving the truck again, per my instructions (again) to go cruise at 52mph and they will hear it. I am about to tear them a new ass when they call back, for not calling me and keeping me informed on the situation. 4 days wasted, no call, no fix, no truck.
