Not that I need to, but I can confirm that as well. That fix is for a different sound but the way the TSB was written it makes the service people think it's the same sound.

So, I believe there are two issues at least with my 6MT. I actually had two different sounds. One was more of a high pitched ringing sound that occurred at about 53mph. The other was the lower "howling" sound that happens between 52-64mph. Sometimes I could get them to alternate if I feathered the throttle just right. The dealer did the same insulator sub-assembly on my truck yesterday and it actually resolved the higher sound. My guess is that they are not treating them as separate problems. If you have the true howling issue this probably won't fix it.

Totally agree I'm not aware of such noise associated with the 6spd itself. The rear end screams in this thing, my friend has the same truck in auto sounds the same. The pad insulates the noise...not fixing it.

I am curious as more guys get the new 2018s if this issue is still going to exist.

So has anyone actually taken their truck in to the dealer to address this issue, and actually had the issue resolved? I don't wanna read all 183 pages to find out lol.

I have a 2017 TRD OR DCLB automatic, and I just noticed this noise a week or 2 ago. I've had the truck since late August, the build date was 7/17, in Baja Mexico or wherever the hell. I had heard of this noise being a thing shortly after I bought the truck, but had never heard it until recently. The truck has almost 1,500 miles on it, and I notice the noise right around 55 mph, no matter if I'm accelerating, coasting, or decelerating. It seems to quickly go away once I get below 55 mph though.

Do people know yet if this is a serious concern? I hate to think that my brand new truck is being damaged every time I drive it

My Toyota regional engineer said it was a characteristic of the truck and not a wear or safety issue.

    Which I only half believe.

    My experience has been:
Took to the dealer. Dealer said bad pinion bearing. They replaced rear diff. New rear diff was just as loud if not louder so they called Toyota to send out an “engineer”. Who said what I mentioned ^

I called Toyota Corp and started a case and now I get monthly updates saying they’re working on it but no TSB yet for it.

Preface: I have designed many many gearboxes over the years.
I personally don't think it's a wear or safety issue and yes, I have this whine as well. 50 mph in 4th or 5th feathering the throttle and 70+ mph in 6th feathering the throttle to maintain a fixed speed.
I think it's a characteristic of the design. With that said, it is fixable and the noise can be engineered out. But I have no problem with them deadening the sound if they would just come up with a true fix. I am ordering some dynamat and going to do the back cab wall and back floor to see if it helps. I also opened a case with Toyota and I kept it very civil.

I am planning on using the sound deadening mat in the back of the cab too in the Springtime. I have some leftover that I used in the doors during the speaker swap.

For all the TL;DR folks: Take your noisy diff truck into the dealer. They'll replace your diff with a new, shiny, gold-plated one that is so well designed and balanced it will silence all other squeaks/rattles/ in your truck.

Or, go back and read and learn some stuff. Help us to help you...

Well since this thread is a year and a half old, and has so many pages I thought maybe by now there may be a simple answer to my questions from my post. I read the first 5 or 6 pages of the thread and everybody pretty much said they had the dealer replace the diff but it didn't fix the problem. Was hoping someone could give a simple answer so I'll know if it's something I should take back to the dealer for, or if it would just be a waste of my time.

But thanks for your sarcastic post anyways

As of right now, there is no solution, have taken mine in 3 times to dealer to document with no solution. Rode with tech, he said we don’t change the differentials since it’s not a fix. Sad but true. It’s been an issue for over 2 years of truck model and nothing, i don’t think Toyota will fix it. Too many rumors of this and that... so don’t take my word, they may have a fix next week.

Took it to two independent shops and both said the same thing, we MAY be able to fix it, but not knowing, may be costly and you may end up with the same sound if it’s a design characteristic.

I’m so turned off by the truck since I drive 30 miles each way to work and 20 of them are in the howl speed.

I may bite the bullet and trade it in... sucks to take a hit on it, but mine is obvious and I’m over it. I started loving this truck, now I hate driving it . It me, it’s who i am, if you are ok with yours, great. They have a great reputation and they are reliable, but I don’t see myself driving 100k miles with that sound. Repairing it will cost same or more than my hit in trade in...

Very dissatisfied and disappointed with Toyota. They lost a customer for life.

    I feel ya.

We’re stuck with trade in the only real option too.

Can’t sell it private party because once they hear that howl it’s game over.

No one is going to asking price for a truck that howls to you at cruising speed.

So you trade it in or cut $5k off the asking price.

    Kind of frustrating IMO.

*I plan on keeping my truck. I’ll lift it and put bigger tires on it if I have to. Which I think just makes you have to mash the pedal more so you spend less time in the howl sweet spot.

Personally, even though this thread is really long, I think there are relatively few of us that have this issue. Let's say there are a thousand of us... that's like one out of every 300 trucks and for some of those 300 they don't even know it's not normal! I'm saying it's really closer to one in a thousand. I also think Toyota is working on either a solution to deaden the sound or a solution to fix the source.

I too am not convinced that it is simply the rear differential gears. I think it could be a combination of things, like pinion angle, backlash, harmonic vibration at a certain frequency, etc, and that is why Toyota is taking so long. That, and the fact that not many trucks exhibit this challenge. Sometimes it's tough, even for an engineer, to figure crap out. Hopefully they will come up with a solution before I use the final solution... trade it.

I had the shop form n in my truck who's been with Toyota since 1984. He openly told me, replacing the carrier assembly will have no change. Its frequencies from the meshing of the gears, regear it and you'l habe no noise LOL

Automatic and Manual have different gear ratios and still howls, and some guys here had the rear changed out and have the noise go away.

Which is one reason I think it's multiple components together that cause the noise.

I am in total agreement, think there is a combination of several different things causing the issue.

Maybe stochastic resonance...would explain the randomness or sensitivity to it.

Hopefully whatever it is, it's not causing any real damage to anything. And it would be sweet if they came up with a legit fix for this at no charge to people who have the issue. This is the first ever new vehicle I ever bought, so having stupid little issues already like this is kind of annoying. I still love the truck though and don't want to trade it in
