I'd venture to say that there are a lot of Tacoma owners out there that have gotten this issue, and probably others, checked out because of Smitty's thread about it.

If someone is having a legitimate issue with their truck, it benefits all of us if they document it here, even if we don't happen to have the same issue at that moment. Also puts it on Toyota's radar, assuming they do actually read this forum.

The Service Manager at my dealership indicated that the FSR said Toyota is working with the diff manufacture and the manufacture is saying that they built it to Toyota's spec. Not sure how true this is but due to the potential cost of a fix affecting so many vehicles I can imagine that there would be some finger pointing going on.

Is it too late for Toyota and the diff supplier to qualify for the Olympic Blame Game?

So I'm trying to figure out if the noise I'm hearing is what everyone in this thread is talking about. It's a distinct whine - almost like a turbine engine - that comes and goes at various speeds and in various gears for about 2 seconds at a time. So far, it's been hard for me to predictably replicate it with throttle. It seems to happen more on accelerating but I've heard it decelerating with forward pressure on the drive train as well as at light, almost neutral, loads. Loud enough that a passenger asked "what's that" the first time they heard it. 1k miles on the clock - started around 500. Yea or nay?

I bet we will see a recall/tsb later down the road because of this. Enough customers complain, warranty claims, Toyota will either address themselves or get the manufacturer to address, think DANA frames for 2nd gens.

Agree. Mine is while my foot is on the accelerator, but I am decelerating. I can make it happen at will, but mine has more miles on it than yours.

Most say they hear it around 50-60 mph. Could be different for others I guess.

NC. Debating on whether to report it to the dealer now or wait until my 5K. Is this only happening on the new 8.8" diffs? 8.0s unaffected?
