Same issue on my ‘17 trd sport eclb 8,000mi rear howls at 60+mph when feathering throttle. I even have mbrp exhaust and can hear it over that. Annoyed because i just got wheels tires and about to do lift but feel like i should get this taken care of first otherwise they will try and blame that setup

Welcome aboard Craig. I have the same dilemma. I have been wanting to upgrade tires for the 10 months I’ve owned my truck but refuse to give them an easy out by telling me my aggressive tires are louder. They tried that on my second gen too with the driveline vibration issue. Best of luck to you but I’d wait until your case is well documented before upgrading your tires.

Oh, ok. Thank you for clarifying.

I need to crawl under my truck and do a thorough visual on everything, but I don't think it leaks anything. Why don't they just call it a leaky diff instead of weeping? Lol.
Weeping makes it seem like another type of sound the diff makes or something

Doesn't really drip oil out. You can see where it "weeped" out from around the diff.

Oh I see. Mine better not, because it was built after the recall they had for the rear diff on these trucks

Mine was built March of 17, it has been weeping around the studs and nuts as there are wet spots, hope yours is dry.

My 2016 was weeping. They just re-tightened the nuts. Been fine since. Still howling though!

Mine was built in July 17. Haven't checked it yet tho. What studs are you referring to exactly? I can't picture any studs on the diff

The 3rd Member slides over the Studs and is retained by the nuts.

Appointment is set for tomorrow at 3:15. I will be dropping the truck off this afternoon so I don't have to leave work early tomorrow. Good thing I haven't sold my 1st gen yet as I will be needing it for a few days at the least ha

Mines goes in tomorrow for the 10k service. At 5k the tech confirmed the noise but didn't have time to diagnoise.

Don't have high hopes he will find anything tomorrow as it's been minus 0 and it seems quieter when it's cold.

I tried to come out of pocket to have the carrier inspected at the dealership today they flat out refused. Apparently once TFS/Engineering gets a hold of your vehicle they will lock up any chance of you getting it inspected or repaired at any Toyota dealership. They are hiding something and are doing everything in their power to not keep it under warranty.

Yup. Your VIN is now blacklisted. Didn't matter how far I drove the truck or what dealership I went to. Service advisor would call me back and tell me its " normal". You should ask for that field service techs name.

More or less those field service techs go around to different dealerships all day. Their job is more or less to " put out fires" and " damage" control.

I have a 2016 TRDOR manual. Took mine in at 5000 miles and had a whine but was told it was characteristic of the vehicle, so I just had it documented by the dealership at that time. Fast forward eighteen months at my 20k service, they agreed it has gotten exceptionally loud (it had gotten significantly louder over time). They claimed it was a transmission issue and there was a TSB for adding an additional transmission shield to reduce noise. After completing the TSB the noise was still there, so they agreed it had to be the differential and replaced under warranty. I now have 4000 miles on a new differential and there is zero noise, everyone who rode in the truck before and after commented on how quiet it is now.

So at least Toyota is addressing some of them. I would keep up with getting it documented and bring it up every time you go into the dealer.

Thats what their plan is. Replace them on a case by case basis. They're not going to admit anything is defective until the vehicle has drivability concerns.

The mere fact they added the shielding proves thats a band aid fix. Ha.

Their will most likely be a TSB instructing dealerships to ad sound proofing material around the differential. Instead of actually replacing or fixing them, they'll just install sheilds to mask the sound. All of us have the 60k powertrain warranty, Toyota just figures it's a roll of the dice..
