At around 5000 miles I noticed the diff howl. I replaced the fluid with Amsoil and did the breather mod with a filter without a check valve. I'm at 20000 miles now with no diff noise.

There was the one post of the guy who regeared and had the shop examine his old gears and said there was no damage to the assembly. You just have people posting their opinion as fact, while actual facts go unspoken and unnoticed.

    Seriously lol.
The post about it being mechanical is interesting. So worried but my enough to pay out of pocket.

I posted on the beginning of this thread. If mine got it I'd just pay. But I never did so not paying as I have no issues. Fuck am I going to wait for a bunch of idiots that dismiss everything as normal to fix my truck when majority of them only know Camry and Corolla. Don't know shit about trucks. Fuck em rather pay my guy to do it. Support a local shop and one that only does off road rigs.

Rather pay $600 to have it done right than waste my time fighting with dealers over this. Time is money and I need my truck to get to work if I miss more than two days of work with no outcome from dealer I've now lost more than if I just paid to have it done right in one day.

So just a harmonic issue not mechanical.

I try to hear it when my winters are on and hear nothing. Any other time the duratrac are too loud and I can't hear shit.

Besides broken parts are an excuse to tell the wife why I need new gears and front locker haha

I had two different diffs replaced in October and November, neither one helped and the one I have now is actually louder than the original. Now it is a normal operating noise according to Toyota and they brought a different 2017 truck like mine to show me it was making the noise too. Its a shame really.

I had a similar experience but they only replaced one diff before calling it "a characteristic of the dclb Tacoma". My second diff was also way louder.

Make sure and call corporate and get a case started and absolutely do not let them close it until it's resolved.

I had to be firm with the west coast rep to make sure she didn't write me off.

I also emailed Lentz office and got in contact with the US branch to get them involved too.

I called the Toyota Hotline first though and started a case that way. First lady was super nice and helpful.

Regional Rep not so much unfortunately, although I don't blame her really. She was just towing the line.

What I really wanted was to get the Toyota Engineer that came out and drove my truck on the line but they protect those guys pretty well.

I figured if I got his name on my paper and I did actually have a failure at some point... I'd have his name.

Just wondering; I'm on the fence for a 2018 DCSB TRD OR. Is this 3d gen "rear diff howl" a significant enough abnormality that one should take it into consideration when making a decision for a 2018 purchase? A broad question I know, but would appreciate so input form 3rd gen Tacoma owners smarter than me.
    Thanks
    Bob

Just got off the phone with the service department. They have a new carrier housing assembly for me. Will schedule the service soon.

I think it depends on how loud the noise will end up being. I have the upgraded jbl sound system in my truck and I can still hear the noise with the volume all the way up. Mine is a 2017 though, don't know abut the 2018's

I did get everyone's name that was there and involved in the attempted repairs and the team leader that drove with me. I did not get a ride with an engineer. I really can't blame the dealership because it was Toyota telling them they couldn't do anymore.

In my opinion, it's nothing. Truck is super quiet for what it is. Go drive one and feather the throttle between 50-60 mph and see what you think. My guess is you'll hear a slight sound and laugh at what a big deal people on this forum make about it but we all have different expectations. I love my truck.

    Mine is loud.

And I guarantee you wouldn't laugh if you heard it. At least no one I know who has heard it has laughed.

I really like my truck and this howl is enough for me to be disappointed.

That being said I plan on doing something about it. Others have had luck with lifts and tires or re-gearing.

But I’ll give Toyota a chance to fix it first.
