You dodged a major bullet my friend. You'll find another truck. Explore tundra or F150s.

My 2017 TRD OR (same truck) had to get swapped at the 10,000 mile service from a seeping gasket.

    Did you get it back?

This is a great thread. I've read through it several times, asking questions as I went along; getting several raw truth, valuable answers, thanks. But it's like the drive line vibs problem, a zillion adjustments, shims etc. can be done. but the bottom line appears, I said appears, to be a single piece drive shaft. So, for the read diff howl is there a bottom line answer? Like a new $600 after market diff, or is it as simple as one posted stated, new 75-90 gear oil and no more howl.
I have to admit between the drive line vibs and now the howling difs my confidence i Toyota is being stressed.

Am I the only one running 80W90 conventional fluid? I drained my diff at 5k and put Supertech fluid in as a flushing fluid. I am at 26k now and my diff is quiet as a mouse. I did not drain the front till about 15k and I regreted waiting after seeing the old fluid.
At 15k I refilled the front with Amsoil 75w90. I have Amsoil for the rear but have not put it in.
I have the base 4 cylinder 4wd manual though. Have not heard of any complaints about those.
I looked at the Toyota PDS and appears that the 6 cylinder AT trucks have the same diff ratios as the 4 cylinder manuals. Could this issue be caused by the Frankencamry engine?
Not bashing the engine, but if someone could verify that part numbers for the differentials are the same, then that would be substantial. Unless we are towing, the differentials should see exactly the same stress.

I did a test this morning. With the HD radio volume set to 30 and Mrs. Robinson playing I can still hear the howl ha The entire way from 60 down to 54. I could hear it pretty well actually and I don't have the greatest hearing. I also found out this weekend that I have the howl right at 44mph. That one you actually have to listen for though.

I'll probably give it to 1,000 or 1,500 miles (currently at 750) before I try corporate or the dealer again. I'm not expecting anything, but I want it documented that it seems to be getting louder.

    Yes.

Be sure to explore the F150, which just the past October had three new 3 transmission recalls (non-related to each other) and a new recall with the 3.5 eco-boost.

I know you're upset about your howling rear end, but recommending a Ford to someone is just, well, mean.

Every single truck out there has some issues. Lots of recalls, TSB's and just plain old common problems. People just need to pick.

    Apparently not.

Apparently it's only Toyotas...Tacomas to be exact.

That's what I've gleaned with being a TW member since August of last year.....

In preparation for my 2 hour drives, I installed 1/2 inch polyurethane foam on the plastic behind the rear seats and I would wager I cut the noise to my ears by 25%. I have thin stuff on the way for the doors. I will get under the truck and see if I can stick some of the foam under the bed above the differential to try and absorb some sound waves near the source.

In the Spring I am going to pull the rear seat out and Dynamat the rear of the cab in hopes that it will help.

Reading all this through since my last post makes me happy I leased the truck to test the waters with, well, having a truck. I actually enjoy driving it, the noise is annoying and there's some other weird shit with it but I guess all I can do is mention stuff at my routine service and go about my day. As long as I don't die from something crazy happening, all is gravy. I am watching these threads like a hawk though so that I can be educated on what's going on when I do actually go in for service.

Join and spend some time reading a Tundra, Colorado, F150, etc specific forum and that's exactly what you're going to find... a bunch of people whining about every little thing wrong with their truck.

This forum seems to be excessively plagued with them--the whiners that is.

I’m not sure talking about, and trying to find a solution to, a problem is whining. I agree that there are some excessively picky issues being raised here and there but the rear diff howling is not one of them. For example, for a midsize truck I do not find the Tacoma to be as noisy as some say it is. Maybe I have a quiet one. But, I have owned close to 30 new vehicles in my life and this is the first one I’ve ever had that had a rear diff noise this loud. A truck that costs this much money shouldn’t do this. If people want to talk about it and even gripe about it, does it really matter? Best of luck.

Really? You absolutely have no idea.

That fact you come here to stir shit up speaks to your character.

Having owned all three trucks listed and being a member of Tundras.com, F150Forum.com and ColoradoFans.com, yes, I have a pretty good idea...

I also happen to have a Tacoma that howls (whines?:rimshot:) and have been an active member of this thread--I'm hardly here to just "stir up shit".

    You added your 2017.

I’m not one to complain about car noises typically.

But this howl in my truck stops conversations. Literally: “What’s that noise”

My wife who is tone deaf thinks it’s annoying.

Maybe your whine isn’t too bad? Lucky you.

Coming here to call us “whiners” seriously rubs me the wrong way.

Hell let's even remove money from the equation. A new vehicle shouldn't do it.
    Nice try Toyota.
