Maybe you guys can help here.......mine started a low howling noise about 400 miles ago, but it is intermittent. It doesn't always do it, but when it does, it is from 45 mph and up. But when it rains, it howls at any speed above 5mph. I can't tell if it is coming from the rear or if it's the lca's or who knows what else. I only have 1200 miles on it so far. It sounds like smitty99's video, but doesn't always do it. When it howls it doesn't matter if I am on/off the gas or brake. My taco is still stock right now, too concerned about issues before making any mods.

To rule out LCAs plug those holes. Duct tape will do a good temp fix so you can start to isolate

Mine starts coming to stop (coasting/under load/de-cel) and at 50 mph or so, haven't brought it in yet partly because I know I'll get a run around. 3900 odo.

I will probably do this later this evening to see if it helps. I hope that's all it is. I did get a platinum 8year/125k warranty from the tranny fluid issues, but I just hate more issues! I know you're issues are worse, but there shouldn't be any!

Since mine is intermittent, it may take a while to tell.

Wow not surprised by the results I guess but a bit disappointed with Toyota. Good news is this will probably be the next high priority fix with leaf springs as it seems to prolific

Yeah, I'm feeling a little let down......reliability and indestructibility is what I really count on.....maybe they will be fixed and it be ok, but I want this truck to last at least 20 years! I'd like to have it last a million miles....that'd be really awesome, like the dude in La with the million mile+ tundra......

Hopefully a combo of TSBs and Recalls will address these issues but some of these things are not petty "switch for my power window stopped working" problems

The thing is that everyone has to go bring it up to there dealers to get this taken care of faster. I have been more than a handfull of times, but if people just sit on it, or ignore it, then it isn't helping anyone. Unfortunately I have a feeling that this is one of those issues that will go unmentioned for a while by a lot of people. Hopefully I am wrong and there is a TSB in the pipeline before too long.

If tape over the lca's doesn't work I will make an apt for my 5k service in a couple weeks and bring this up too

I listened on my home and heard nothing, however on my way to work today I could hear what I would describe as a whistling noise while going about 60. I've heard this noise before and just thought that is was the whistling people were complaining about coming from the front end. I can't really tell if it's coming from the front or back of my truck, so I'm going to tape over the holes in the LCA's when I get the chance and then test. If I was looking at the right numbers my truck was built 10/15 and it's a TRD Sport M/T.

My truck howls anywhere between 45-60 depending on the weather/conditions. Definitely magnifies when you let it coast/free spin. I also have the whistle caused by either my window seal or door seal, aka the "kazoo". Fog lights stopped working as well.

The noise issue under the truck became more prominent over the last few thousand miles, hard to say for sure though as I listen to music pretty loud most days.

I really like my truck but my whining diff annoys the hell out of me. I can hear it over the radio and my whole commute to work is around that "sweet spot" of ~55mph. I've gone through the whole time wasting process of taking to the dealer twice. The first time the master tech tried to tell me it was the aggressive tires that came on my brand new OR. After I called BS on that they had me leave it for a week so that the engineers from the other side of the country could asses it. They drove it (and another truck on the lot) and determined that the other truck made a similar sound and therefore it must be normal. Grrrrrrrrrrr! They told me not to worry because if something is wrong with the diff it will certainly fail before my warranty is up. Bullshit! An improperly meshed diff can whine for long time and may never have a catastrophic failure. My next step is to call corporate and voice my discontent. I just don't have the time or energy to fight this crap right now. PS: it started at about 1500 miles, I'm at 12500 miles now and it has changed a little in that it used to do it between 50-55 and now it does it between 50-60. So here I sit hoping my rear diff will grenade soon.

Man I agree on all points 110%. Keep fighting the good fight man. They need to recognize this as a potential major issue down the road affecting many trucks. I bet we will see another TSB on this if the pressure stays up on Corporate and the dealers to address.

I just bought a 2016 DCSB OR 4x4. How prevalent is this issue? Do the guys who are experiencing the problem spend a lot of time off road?

No. Mine hasn't been off road yet. It started right around 500 miles and bothered the hell out of me for all of a 3500 mile road trip.

Is it safe to say the rear end howl is only on the new 8.75 axle? I've had it since new on my trd MT. I'm leasing so it's not even worth it for me to take it in. I don't think it affects reliability, just annoying.

They replaced my rear diff trying to fix this problem. It wasn't fixed.

I test drove a dozen trucks on the lot. The service manager had them lined up waiting for me to test drive them when I came it. He's the one that told me to feather the throttle to reproduce the noise.

It happens on every.single.Tacoma. some were worse than other but it occurred on all of the ones I tested. The service manager, who is great, said he hadn't driven one that didn't have the issue.
