This tsb, if correct, makes a lot of posts and certain posters look very bad.

I have a tiny rural dealership that moves a fraction of what your Dealer does. The automatic OR they gave me for a 3 day extended test drive started howling at about 50 miles, my truck howls, and the salesman showed me a QS OR up on the rack swapping the rear out because they wanted to be up front about the trucks. Probably hard to get any real hard data from either your dealership or mine.

Exactly. I posted many times in this thread about this not being only the gear set. Here's a few from Sept 2017:

"Yeah same. It could be tooth profile at certain rpm, harmonic developed through case, backlash maybe but that usually gives you noise in many conditions, not just a narrow band of speed. It could be a lot of things but is it a problem is the issue. A constant howl is one thing. A slight whine for a second when letting off throttle is something else."

    Another:
"I think their opinion is "I shouldn't have to fix it myself, it's Toyota's problem." Personally I think it's a gray area because, while it's an annoying noise, it probably is not detrimental to the reliability or durability of the truck. Truthfully, judging from that recording above, I don't know if resetting gear set properly is the real problem. Could be many things, like work hardening, harmonics, shim compression, qc or any myriad of things. From what I've read, some 2nd gens have this issue as well. I do know it only effects a small percentage of owners so apparently it is not a widespread problem."

Somebody somewhere in Toyota has the stats. Personally I can only use the data I can get, and that is from my local dealer. Your dealer has a bunch, relatively speaking.

It's a strange issue for sure as you have listed several possible causes. Some guys had the rears swapped only to have the problem be the same, get worse, or be fixed altogether. You are correct that Toyota has to have that data on hand somewhere but we can only guess at the number, it had to be a percentage high enough to trigger a TSB.

Curious.....if this isn't for the 2018 MY, it would be interesting to have a 2018 owner look at their rear leaf springs to see if this harmonic damper is there from the factory.

And WTF Toyota, Access Cabs need it too!

The TSB states its vibrations from the rear differential transferring through the chassis/body that's causing the noise. So isn't replacing the leaf springs not really fixing the ultimate cause of the noise? I'm not complaining I am happy that this should stop the damn howl haha The TSB just makes it sound like its a fix to cover up the real cause.

I just hope they move on to 2018 DC's soon as thats what I have :burnrubber:

I have a 2018 with a howl from 61-53 on decel. I really hope I don't have the damper and new leafs underneath as this would mean the TSB won't fix the issue ha

I was also under the truck last week and did not notice a damper. Then again I'm not really sure what one would look like for this fix.

Every single gear box, transmission, differential or anything else that has gears and spins will cause a vibration. That cannot and will not be fixed. The key is to keep it small and damped. It sounds like the diff was setting up a harmonic through the leaf springs in certain situations on certain vehicles.

I understand that any mechanical rotating mass will have some type of vibes. I just don’t like that I got the one with more vibes than the rest ha

I don’t have my manual with me, but I wonder what diff is BD22 is? My luck probably not the one under my SR5 haha Not that it matters much right now. I’m sure a TSB for the 2018’s will come after all of the 2017’s are taken care of. I guess I just got to be patient. Not something I am good at

I started looking around last night to figure out what rears are BD22, looks like it is the new 8.75s.

This makes me happy. Even though I replaced the truck that was making the noise with the exact same truck (different color) that doesn't make the noise, If it ever does I know there is a TSB for that.

All the trips I went to the dealership and was told " its normal" now Toyota has officially contradicted themselves. I wonder how many of these TSB fixes will be applied with the " dampening" fix will result in reduced or absent rear differential whine. If it does come back after a fix, it's apparent this is a band aid/ mickey mouse solution concealing a greater issue.

That tsb link above shows the tsb is only for TRD pro/offroads doesn't it. I have a SR5, I need to know if this really works sooner rather than later

I was thinking the same thing. I’ve been waiting, sometimes more patiently than other times, for a fix. As long as this is the fix, I’m happy.

    No, it's for:
All model doublecabs with manual transmissions
All TRD Off Road and TRD Pros auto or manual.

It has to do with the larger differential size 8.75's, not the smaller 8.4's.

So SR5's are not part of this TSB...?
