I am sure there are a handful of guys that put different tires on that could have them roar, but the TSB that Toyota just came out with is to solve the Rear Howling at 50-60 mph. If that cures the problem I think you will see alot of happy owners!

The TSB states this is covered under the 3yr/36K warranty??? Wouldn't it be covered under the longer power train warranty? I had this issue well documented when my truck had only about 2000 miles on it. I left the truck at the dealer for days, Toyota engineers flown in from Mars deemed normal characteristic of truck blag blah blah. Now I have 40,000 on the clock and I've been so annoyed by the howl the whole time. I will vapor lock if they tell me to piss off because I'm past 36k. That's not going to happen because it was documented early on, right guys? Riiiggghhht???

Fanboys / people that take criticism of their vehicle purchase choice personally. As if any gripe about the the truck is an affront to them.

It's kind of to be expected on an enthuisist site.

This gen deserves criticism. Criticism is the only way this stuff gets fixed. I wish it was fixed faster, but those guys that get mad when you complain are the same ones that put their heads in the sand about issues and don't fight to get them fixed. They actually actively fight to deny the issues.

I *might* have kept mine if I saw light at the end of the tunnel, but it was howling so badly I couldn't stand driving it at all.

If they fix this, the transmission, and brake pedal buzz I might consider one in 5 years. For now I'm enjoying the shit out of my Outback.

I'd definitely fight the hell out of them since you had a case and now they are contradicting their original disposition .

Are you referring to the pedal buzz in some ORs (booster buzz)?

    Yea.

No other vehicle I have EVER driven had that "normal" characteristic. Mine was so bad they replaced that whole assembly to fix it. It made it wayyy better but it was still there.

Seriously, I've driven at least 100 different vehicles in my life from sports cars to giant trucks. None have had a brake pedal buzz. That's how Toyota rolls I guess.

Sounds like yours was really annoying. The most mine will do is a short click or two when when I first get on the brakes. Anyway, you're not the only one I've heard about with that vibration. Good luck and see you in a few yrs maybe

Nobody should have to deal with imperfections in a new car...no argument here.

In laws have a 2016 outback with the cvt. You are probably aware of the well documented issues with the cvt that resulted in a warranty extension for MY 2010 to 2015...right?

You’re also probably aware that consumer groups and owners are saying that Subaru is not doing enough....that it’s a safety issue and deserves a full recall?

Well my in laws are screwed because while they have the problem, Subaru doesn’t recognize that it exists in anything later than the 2015s and a prior TSB also does not cover the 2016s.

Yes gear noise and pedal buzz sucks, but a tranny with a track record of 5+ model years of stalling on hills and intersections is dangerous. A tranny that owners and consumer groups are begging the NHTSA to investigate also deserves criticism...correct?

People come on this forum and defend their purchase...it’s expected. You said as much. It’s when people come on this forum and bash other people’s purchases that I have a problem. Especially when they do it over and over and over and over.

Don't put that outback tranny evil on me ricky Bobby!! (I believe they remapped the transmission to remove the fake shift points on the 15+ my vehicles..maybe thats related to the problem?)

I'll cross that bridge if I have to. So far I've only been back yo the dealership twice: once to pick up my hoody I worked into the deal, and the second for my first oil change.

I really hope they fix these trucks up for you guys. I wanted one since I was 14 years old. Maybe I built it up in my head too much? I wanted to love it. I just couldn't. Maybe they'll fix it to the point where I will be tempted to try again, but for now I'm soured by Toyota and the Tacoma.

I'm just here for this great community.

I would hope that since your truck is documented with the issue and they have had a fix in the works forever that they 'should' cover the problem even though you are past the 3/36 period.

I'm not sure it was a shift point issue....my in-laws are experiencing odd stalling at bad times, like stopping on a hill. From what my father in law said, there has been an issue with the torque converters. There was a redesign in 2015 or 2016 but it has not solved the problem. My mother in law refuses to drive it. My father in law took it in, showed them the old TSB and the extended warranty offers on earlier models and outlined the problem.

This was after he was initially told it was " a normal characteristic of the CVT" (sound familiar?) and then later told that while this issue is the same as on the TSB affected vehicles, the 2016 was not in the TSB so tough shit. He's gotten the run around from corporate and the resale value on the car kinda stinks. He's not feeling the love.

The lesson here is that two people can own a Toyota and have two different experiences, and two people can own a Subaru and have different experiences. You got soured by Toyota and have found safe haven in Subaru, any in laws are soured by Subaru and are looking at a Highlander.

As I explained in another thread, the howl TSB is not a fix. They are not fixing anything. They are reducing what they claim is a normal drivetrain resonance and adding sound deadening. It's an attempt to eliminate the owner from hearing a noise considered normal.

When I first heard the howl I sent a lot of time perusing forums and obsessing about it. After two mechanics basically told me what hiPSI told me in a PM I stopped worrying but was still slightly skeptical. After we re-geared and the shop showed me that there was no damage on the tear down (and further confirmed hiPSI's postulation) I realized that much of what I read in this thread was pure and utter bullshit.

Seems like the Fix in the TSB is more in the Springs than in sound deadening, if I read it correctly the only sound deadening being added was to the #5 pillar. The sound definitely is a harmonic vibration, the Fix is obviously to cancel it out.

Can you please describe this brake pedal buzz a bit more? Is this an audible noise that you hear, or something you feel with your foot?

I had the pedal buzz, it would make my foot tingle almost go numb very uncomfortable, when they switch out the rear diff for the howl it improved drastically
