I have a 2017 Tacoma trd sport I have barely drove it because of this sound I took it to the dealer and they said they could not hear it so I took it back and they ended up putting a new transmission in my truck only has 2400 miles on it. And my truck still makes the sound and is even louder. Very frustrating. I will be taking it back again .

    Woah. Bummer.

Hope they solve this for you. New transmission is a pretty major deal.

The Howling is most common in the 50 to 60 MPH range while feathering the throttle.

I bought a 2018 double cab short bed off road in March and noticed the whining howl after I had the truck undercoated with about 100 miles on it. I had not noticed it earlier as I had rarely driven in the 53-59 mph range where it occurs prior to undercoating. I have not taken it back to the dealer to date.

It makes a howling, hum , whine between 50-60mph. Most notably at 55ish. If you let balance the accelerator back and forth you can hear the pitch change. They say its due to whatever the hell is going on with the ring/pinion/ housing is causing harmonic resonance through the springs and cab so they added foam , dampeners and new springs to
Reduce the noise but not solve the problem.

The problem IS the noise. Reducing the noise is reducing the problem. Eliminating the noise, however it is done, is eliminating the problem. It's a resonance. There is no problem with any of the components except they resonate at a certain frequency and amplitude, which happens to be at a certain speed and load. Every vehicle has a natural resonance, except some are well insulated so the noise is not noticable.
There is really not much to change. Leaf springs have to be a certain design, the rear diff has to look like it does and the joining of the two can only be accomplished a few ways. Insulation and dampening is the best solution.
I had it. I cured it by getting rid of the truck. I got another one just like it and so far the noise is very faint so no issues... yet.

Probably a long shot, but can anyone who had the TSB completed snap a few pics of the rear cab mounts with the new parts as well as the interior pad pillar? I purchased the pad pillar, but I am not exactly sure where to put it in the C pillar. All the TSB says is at the bottom and I can't see it in the picture on the TSB pdf (I could be blind). I can't get my hands on the damper, but I am curious what it looks like and what type of material it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So, nearly 2 months after I had the truck inspected for the noise, I finally got the TSB completed today.

I took a route home that was known for making the most racket that offered a good mix of driving in the 40-70 MPH range. The noise is still there, however it is SIGNIFICANTLY reduced--I'd call it an 80-90% reduction. Mine made noise from 45-70 but was loudest in the 55-60 range. Before, you could hear it with the windows down and the radio halfway up. After the TSB was completed, you have to really listen with the windows up and radio down to be able to hear it. I know it's there but the average person would likely not hear it. The road noise from my BFG's, more or less, drowns out the very small amount of noise it makes.

Ride height/quality did not seem to be affected... I measured it to be approximately 1/8-3/16 taller after TSB completion but I chock that up to slight differences in the way it was parked or because the new springs haven't fully settled yet.

I double checked all the hardware they messed with and everything seemed to be A-OK.

Either way, I'm pretty happy with the results. Now on to the next battle--getting them to replace the high pressure fuel pump to silence my chirpy birds.

80-90% reduction sounds pretty good to me! I’d be happy with that I think. Hope it stays that way for ya!

Dropped my rig off at the dealer tonight. Will followup tomorrow. Mine was really loud 45-60 on coast only. Peaking around 50-55 mph. Mine made no noise until 16k miles, then i t was very noticable. I have just over 19k miles now.

Unrelated note: the dealer had 2 second gens on the lot, one auto, one manual. Both 15's I believe. Priced at 30k or so. Just in case someone is looking to jump ship...

They started out very poorly, but have picked up the effort the last couple of trips. Honestly, I'd say 7/10. Not real great if I'm honest.

I'm willing to push them though. I do service work for a living so I am very good at handling people.

haha hopefully all goes well! Have you by chance ever tested out how loud the radio has to be to drown out the howl?

I'm still waiting on parts going on almost two months now. First set of leaf springs arrived and were the wrong ones. New parts ordered again and only the left side came in. Toyota does not have an ETA on the right.

On a side note, I was driving on the highway with the sun visor against the drivers window and it fell off. Visor was dangling and managed to pop it back up. Happened a few more times, took it to Toyota and they popped up back in. Next day it fell out again. New visor on order. No ETA.
