Same as you, didn't bash dealer and calmly spoke with corporate and expressed my concerns about confidence and reliability.

Can we shut this down before this thread gets thrown way off track (again)?

After listening to usafwx's video, I am leery this may be affecting my truck too. I have taped the LCA's, but not all (for drainage), and sometimes there is a slight howl that sounds similar to the video, but at any speed, not what is described in this thread. It could be more wind noise, but I am glad for all the info and videos here so I can get it documented if it does get louder. Keeping tabs on this thread to see if/when a solution arises.

I had the LCA TSB done to confirm that wasn't it. This is the sound and it happens all different speeds and times. Seems to be worse when it rains or is cold out. I best describe it as a ghost howling in the background faintly. lol.

Hmmmm....it may very well be the diff....it sounds much louder in rain, although the taped LCA's have reduced the noise in the rain.

The sound is more prevelant towards the rear too, that's what gave it away for me the first time I heard it. The LCA crosswind howl is different pitched and more evident in strong crosswinds than the diff. howl.

It's kinda hard for me to distinguish where it is coming from, so that's why I'm waiting to see if it gets worse. After taping the LCA's, it was drastically reduced, even in the rain, so I'm kinda stumped.

Think they'll still say that even if a lot of people get it documented? Even if it's common for this truck, I'd still like to know what's causing it. What is Toyota doing differently that most other manufacturers aren't? Never had a problem with diffs before. Not interested in extended warranties, just want this fixed.

I agree that I just want it fixed, but that extended warranty did make me feel a bit more at ease. I also was looking at it as "hey I have the issue either way, might as well see if they can hook me up for it."

I agree with your sentiments ultimately but also as MasterPenguins said...it's better than being stuck with nothing but the problematic vehicle. It will likely help improve private resale a year or two down the road as these are transferrable warranties (one time for free). If ford ranger comes out with a good looking design, I'm going to be all over it!

I hear you. Some reading this thread think we're trying to get something for nothing. Just making it clear, all I want is a fixed truck.

So a baby update from me (if you can even call it an update). Called corporate again today just to make sure that the fact that my second diff is whining is documented in as many places as it can be, and to see if I can squeeze a little bit more info out of someone. I told them that I thought it was odd that they replaced my differential, and then when I came back with the same symptoms that the conclusion was that "it is normal, for now." I got a kind of perplexed "Hmmmmm" in response. Then he said that it looks like the dealer and the field tech looked at it, and suggested that maybe I should take it to another dealer for a second opinion. I told him that in my opinion my dealer and the field tech both think that there is an issue, but they aren't getting any clear direction as how to fix it. Got another "Hmmmm." At this point I was practically begging them to tell me it was a known issue and that they are working on a fix. I said that honestly I assume that there will be a TSB or a Recall in the future and that I was just calling to get this documented and collect a case #. He then seemed to relax and continued with the practiced lingo "Well if it gets worse take it back to the dealer, and call us back. I have a new case # for you to reference." So no new info, but I guess I accomplished what I wanted.
