There is no noise out of range per the Toyota field engineer that scoped my truck under driving conditions.

Interesting. So, if Toyota says it's not too loud, it's not too loud. I might beg to differ.

So, what does Toyota deem to be out of range? Sorry folks, but we all know the noise is not normal. I still think it’s a resonance issue, but it’s still making an abnormal amount of noise. Just because a hired gun from corporate says it’s ok doesn’t make it ok. If it bothers you then keep fighting.

Exactly. Don't quit, guys. Toyota needs to fix this. And they won't fix it if they don't know it's a big problem. And you need to let them know that's it's a big problem (assuming it's a big problem FOR YOU).

This is a big problem for me. $38k is a lot of money, only to drive off the lot and have the truck chirp and hum. I listened to it howl for an hour and a half last week on a road trip. The truck was less than two weeks old. The noise appeared three days after I drove off the lot.

Don't lie. Just say "hey, my truck is making a noise that it's not supposed to be making." And you want it fixed. You want the noise ALL THE WAY GONE.

Seems a majority of guys report that it's "60%" better, or some variation of the sort, after having the TSB completed. I'd agree. It's probably better after the TSB. In my case that's arguable, as it's not as loud, but it's now happening at a greater speed range. So to say it's better... I don't know. I might change my mind.

I want the noises GONE. So, it sounds like those trucks that do NOT have the noises.

Wouldn't surprise me if this continues onto the 2019s when they come out, I too think it is just resonance so I am not sure they could ever rid it. Funny how once you hear that Howling its impossible to not notice it, my next project is sound deadener under the rear seat and the back of the cab which I think will help with how loud it sounds.

I agree. But, to me this is lack of true R&D at the preproduction phase. They should have caught this. I recall Sweers being so hyper focused on the driveline vibration being gone with the third gen so I know they were working on fixing the known issues from the second gen. But, they may have created another issue in the third gen with this howling. Resonance issues can either be fixed or masked. Toyota has tried to mask it (always the easiest option) and there has been limited success, so maybe now they will focus on fixing it. Fixing this issue could get very involved. If the song from corporate is its normal then I’m sure the 19s will have it too. But one thing I’m seeing is that a lot of the new to third gen customers are not happy and many want out. Ford and Jeep will be glad to get their business and the Colorado is slated for an all new truck in 2020. Post TSB for the howl and TSB0058, I’m happy. I may still take mine back over the howling but I’m good right now. My truck finally drives like it should post ECU flash.

Why do you not go back into the dealer and then persue legal avenues after 3-4 failed attempts at a fix? This is not normal. And I don't see how Toyota can claim such, as widespread as this issue seems to be.

I can't see any reasonable amount of sound deadener masking this sound into the history books. I can see cancelling the sound having a shot at working, assuming it's resonance. But insulating is gonna be very difficult.

My dealer checked wheel bearings supposedly and most things in the rear. They say the sound is only coming from the 3rd. However I suggested the noise may be coming from a the carrier bearing or t-case, but they never confirmed and just gave it back once they stated the new one on the lot makes more noise. I agree that this is not normal and in all my years if a rear-end makes noise something is not right.

Do the 4runner off-roads use the same 3rd member as I know the 3r in the taco OR is different than the taco sr5 or sport. (different rearend).

So. After seeing unsuccessful results with TSB and scheduling a follow-up appointment as a result, the dealer told me to not come back, as they have no other fix for the issue. There appears to be a communication gap between the dealers and corporate.

Back to square one, but I'm far from being done with this.

Keep the pressure on guys. And let us know of your results here on Tacoma World. Noise is not acceptable, assuming there are other truck without the noise.

That's how the frame recall was born.

Make another appointment. If you have to show up at the dealer and take a selfie with the service manager. If they fail to address it THAT is a failed service attempt. I had GM try that with me. It’s their way of trying to avoid failed attempts and I’d almost guarantee you it’s under advisement from corporate. Get your concerns noted and even if you have to pencil in on the work order dealer refused service, do it. Worst case go to another dealer.

Do you have any info on the T4R whining? We are looking at one now and I don’t want to go through this again.

Had the howl / whine about 58 mph on the coast side about 20 K. Dealer replaced rear diff and it's been quiet since 55k on the ODO now.

What year model, which model (OR, Pro, etc.), and did you wheel it a lot?

16 4R SR5 - 90% highway use. No severe OR use. Dealer said it's common weak point on these. [Needle bearing]. There is a TSB that lumps the Tacoma and 4Runner on the needle bearing.

Wow. I just dropped off my VW GTI at the shop (it’s favorite place) again and asked the lady about any issues with the Atlas. After a long, uncomfortable pause, she said that they had “a lot, uh, really a lot, of programming updates, but it’s a new model”. Well, that’s how my Audi’s were as well and that means time at the dealer that I don’t have so the Atlas can now be marked off the list. I guess we will look at the Subaru Ascent. I really liked the Land Cruiser but like many Toyota vehicles it’s well past due for an updated model. Not to knock the T4R but that infotainment system really needs updating. We are downsizing from an 18 month old Yukon XL.
