My first differential was full with clean, clear fluid checked at 10 miles. I first noticed the howling at 500 miles.

My second differential howled from the second I drove off the dealership's lot and I assume they filled it to spec. I'm sure the tin foil hat crowd would assume that the dealer didn't actually replace the differential and that's why my '2nd' one failed immediately but that's not the case. The new one howls much louder than the first and at different load levels so I know it's a different differential.

Mine started around 5500 miles only while decelerating between about 54-56mph. Now at just shy of 7000 miles, I can hear it anywhere between about 50-60 mph and it will do it while accelerating lightly as well.

+1. First diff was full when checked. Second diff was flushed a few times and filled by dealer, howled as soon as I drove it off the lot.

Dealer contacted me today. Says FTS will be in town Thursday morning. I'm tied up with work that day. Asked him if he can reschedule for the afternoon. Will see what they say....no rush I guess. Figure he just going to tell me "normal for the vehicle"

That would be my guess after what my FTS said about my second one. All I am hoping for is for one of them to acknowledge that Toyota knows it is a problem, and that they are working on it.

Dealer called me today. New diff to be installed next Tuesday. So much for the unknown ETA on parts.

I'm in this boat too. Told 'all differentials howl'. K. I politely told my service advisor to cram it.

Anybody notice the howl if they're carrying a load in the bed?

Hmmm haven't had a load and driven over 45mph yet. Maybe I will try to find some heavy stuff and give it a try if I have time this week.

Haven't tested this theory... been too hot to load/unload a bunch of stuff into the back of my truck

I took a road trip with my boat in tow (about 200lbs tongue weight) and another couple hundred pounds of gear in the bed. Still howled the same.

On a side note, and just to elevate my level of discontent. I was driving with my nine year old daughter the other day and out of the blue she says," Daddy, whats that wierd noise your truck is making." I said,"this noise (as I feathered the throttle a bit)." She said, " Yea that." I told her it was something that needs to be fixed and she was like, " but your truck is brand new!" At that moment I had an instance of silent rage in my head and thought to myself, "this is fucking rediculous and unacceptable, Toyota better fix this."
