This is a thread about the rear end howl.

It is literally the the right thread to “bitch” about it.

Now if someone was jumping around randomly thread to thread to complain about it, then you might have a leg to stand on.

I’m not sure why this thread has hurt your feelings but unsubscribe and move on with your day.

We have a legitimate concern here if not for reliability then how annoying the sound is.

its been run for 3 years there is no concern for the reliability of these trucks for any reason or any connection to any such, its been proven by experts. theres many 2016-2018 tacomas with high mileage over 200k miles that are running like the champion mid size truck they are.

If mine was quiet, I would be happy. I don't go into the transmission and engine problem threads and say "mine is great....you don't have a problem".

Some of us are just trying to help take your mind off of it and enjoy the positive aspects of the truck, that's all. Yes the noise sucks ass, and shouldn't exist on a truck of this caliber, but the other 99% of this truck is pure awesomeness.

3rd gens certainly aren't the end of the world, but they haven't lived up to my expectations so far. I have had an 84, 86, 87, and 92 and loved them all to death. This truck does a million things better than those did. More space, power, better mpg, less wind noise, improved handling...I just didn't expect this.

nah, you forget I have the howl too. And yes some days I feel like putting a brick on the accelerator and letting the truck fly off of a cliff lol

Those days are mostly gone though. I've learned to just accept the noise as a quirk.

That’s all good and admirable, but here’s the thing…. Some of us came to TW because we actually like our trucks, and wanted to know what is available to make better use of all its awesome capabilities and maybe share some experiences with others.

As for issues with a vehicle that is still under WARRANTY, that is what the factory trained dealers are for.

So instead, we’re constantly being barraged with crying and whining by people who may have bought the wrong vehicle or want out of it for whatever reason and may even be MAD at TOYOTA for not making them whole because they made the wrong choice in vehicle in all areas of the forum. This thread here was started by the biggest noise maker I have ever seen in any forum

And I’d say that’s the few who does most of the crying, and takes up most of the valuable real state here.

Let me say this, ALL vehicles that run on wheels and tires make some type of front and rear axle road noise. There are no exceptions. NONE.

The difference is on how audible it is to the driver. And just because the noise is at a frequency that some people are sensitive to, it doesn’t mean that is broken or defective, as it maybe implied by the OP on this thread.

That said, vehicle manufacturers do their best to eliminate noises, but there are constraints and limitations based on application and markets and ready available resources.

The first line of defense against those type noises are lubricants such as grease\oil but they make noise too (swoosh), and there’s the matter of not just keeping the noise down, but also proper lubrication and cooling for the expected load.

These lubricants have to meet certain specifications to achieve or address all these given tasks with the known resources and budgets at hand. You could build and optimize lubricants just to cancel or address the noise to make everyone happy, but there is the matter of heat, lubrication, and anticipated load so there are compromises or constraints to be made there too.

Then there is the matter of the intended operational environment, smooth roads, snow, rocks, slippery terrain and list goes on.

You would not want to take a Rolls Royce, BMW or Prius out in the wilderness where the roads are not even on a map. Trust me on this. But If you want quiet, those vehicles are better suited. The type tires have to be made for the intended\anticipated use too. And they also make noise, you’ll just have to trust me on this again.

    Solution(s) against noise?

Other than lubricants, you can apply heavy insulation materials that help a LOT.
But beware of the added weight and its effect on tow capacity and fuel mileage especially if fueling stations are slim and non.
Moreover, I haven’t seen a Rolls or Bimmer with a 5’ bed towing anything yet, but they do have a noise insulated trunk, just saying.
You can also lower the vehicle, install air dam (which are not really practical for use off-road), install tires optimized to minimize road noises, but you may not like the way they perform off-road or in snow.

You see where I’m going with this…

I hope that helps because there’s more noise here about normal noise than the noise itself

And here it comes…Wait for it…

    :crapstorm: :crapstorm:

    Cheers!

I’m not sure why you quoted me but I never said I was looking for quiet.

Toyota already tried to fix my rear end with a new diff and the tsb and the howl is still there. I’ve also replaced the diff with aftermarket oil which is marketed to reduce gear noise (didn’t help).

At this point I am just driving the truck, I’ve got 50k on it. Ignoring the howl doesn’t keep other people in the truck from noticing it and commenting on it though.

I am pretty immune to noise, I drove 5k miles in my last car with a failing wheel bearing until I got around to fixing it. This howl is even more obnoxious that that.

I’m not sure why I’m even commenting on your post, if you heard the howl in my truck you would sympathize with those of us with this issue. Guaranteed.

Also understanding what is causing the noise doesn’t make it less loud or annoying. Particularly when there is no fix.

People have been complaining about this issue for years, literally since the 2nd gens. Toyota hit about a 9.9 out of 10 with this truck... 10 if the noise wasn't there. At the end of the day I judge the truck as a whole and decide if its worth my money. Can't realistically expect perfection.
