Mine has the dampers and per an engineer was done at factory. Not sure what VIN it started at. Mine is 5TFCZ5AN1KX180271

not sure if mine has the rear cab insulation. All i can say is it sure as hell didn’t fix it. Mines noisy 28mph all the way up to 60mph

edit: mine’s been lifted 3” with blocks and it made no difference in noise (i know, i know, i didn’t want blocks)

I know, I did not expect it from Toyota. I wonder if all new tacomas have the same noise but people just ignore it.

It's not a 'major problem', that's why. It's an NVH issue, and one that Toyota *should have* designed out of the vehicle.

IMO, it's a significant design flaw, but not one that will jeopardize the safety/longevity/reliability of the vehicle.

Man that sucks. Mine is relatively quiet until about 54-58 at which point it becomes distracting. At 59 mph it drops off almost instantly.

Strange that you have the dampener mounts. I see that your truck was built in the US, mine was in Mexico. I wonder if that has something to do with it.

Yeah I test drove mine for like 15 minutes before I bought it and loved it. Still love it but damn the noise is stuck in my head lol I can even hear it over podcasts probably cuz I’m listening for it. Gotta train myself to stop.

Even the poll here 50% of fairly picky people don't report hearing the noise. Again mine simply does not have a perceivable noise no matter what I try.

The statistics would suggest that they all have the noise, or at least certain configurations, and in stock form. And that would make sense given that Toyota official stated it's caused by a vibration/resonsance issue involving the frame, springs, and rear differential.

Some people add mods that drown out the noise, others simply can't hear it due to bad hearing or they can't hear certain frequencies.

IMO, the issue is caused by the design of the ring and pinion gears, and how they mesh causing a vibration that is not properly dampened due to poor NVH design. Not a "problem", per se, just an annoying quirk.

I did not know buying a new cars can be like picking a watermelons! Some have issue and some don't. Toyota tries to ignore but for people like us spending 40k on a new car and hearing howl is frustrating! Has anyone tried lemon law on it?

As soon as they replaced my first diff with a new one, the noise reduced to almost none. So in my opinion the noise must be related to metal wear not inability to dampening vibrations

you can't blame Toyota for how the dealership acts. They don't run or control the dealerships.

The decision was not made in dealership. According to dealership they contacted to headquarters in Washington state.

Just called and opened a case for my 2020. I made it clear that the service manager at the dealer wrote it off as normal operation and that my 2018 of the same configuration is silent. I should hear back from them by tomorrow evening.

Just got back from dealer for popping noise in the front end somewhere, I’ve drove myself crazy looking for it and can’t find it. Think it’s the front body mounts, but pulled them and they look good. While I was there also wanted them to document rear diff whining between 50-60mph. We drive the truck and tech heard it, got back and called whoever they call. Putting in a new diff tomorrow.
Truck is a 19 Off-road with 3,800 miles. I just wanted it documented in case something happened, so will see if it helps.
Myself and the tech could make the truck pop in the front end but never could pinpoint the problem

This is the kind of stuff that leaves people confused. I'm glad your dealer is taking your concern seriously, but I sure do wish Toyota would be more consistent with these issues.
Replacing diffs on one truck, TSB on another, calling it normal on another... make up your damn minds Toyota. :annoyed:

Agreed. I got a new diff and it was church pew silent for about 1500 miles - not a peep. Then it slowly started coming back and got louder and louder and the noise was audible at speeds that I couldn’t hear it on with my first diff. My old diff was confirmed bad with excessive amounts of shavings and my pinion angle was off, but once my new one started I didn’t worry with getting anything else done and just unloaded it. I’d really like to see Toyota figure this out and take care of the issue once and for all, but mostly because I’m selfishly tired of not having a truck.

I assume all your differentials have "Made in Thailand" tags? Not saying a quality product can't be made anywhere in the world, just assuming only one place of assembly.
