The way I see it, if a diff replacement did permanently fix the problem for someone, that would be a bad thing for all Tacoma owners complaining of the howl.

That would be a nightmare in fact.

Seems like more of a nightmare for Toyota service depts.

That's true, but I also would not want to have to make constant trips to the dealer, experimenting with multiple diffs to see which one is quiet.

Unless Toyota came out with a redesign of some sort.

It's already constant trips to the dealership if you're trying to solve this.

    None yet.
Took my 16 dcsb to the dealer today for the rear diff, it’s getting replaced but of course I’ve got a wheeling trip coming up in 3 weeks.

My first rear diff was loud as hell. 2nd rear diff was better but still made the noise, but got quieter at temps below 55 and I couldn't hear it at all below 35 degrees. After a year on the 2nd rear diff the sound started to improve and has almost completely gone a way. I was not happy with my truck the 1st year and a half of ownership. Good luck

This is very interesting that it has almost completely gone away.... has anyone else had this experience?

    Yeah, what the hell?

I thought once the noise set in, it was there for good.

@NJTaco08088 Did anything else change at all in the time it basically got quiet? New tires, started bringing your child with you (seats in different position or more rear passengers/cargo), etc?

Similar results as well. 2nd diff howled after 800-1000 miles, but was better than the original. However, the howl seems to be decreasing after the initial howling started as I put more miles on the 2nd diff.

How many miles on first diff when replaced?

How many miles on second diff now that it's getting quieter?

I will have to see if mine changes at all. Only at 2,000 miles now. Driving on main roads here with 55 mph speed limit in traffic is the most annoying howling experience for me. I also sometimes hear it briefly around 35-40 mph and then it suddenly goes quiet.

First diff changed at 400miles. Now have 22,000 miles on the truck.

Excessive shavings was one of the things they noted on mine as well. I am not sure but wonder if going to some Amsoil severe gear or other premium brand would be a good idea? While it hasn’t helped much for the diffs that are howling I wonder if it would help a brand new one. Looking back I wish I had drained the fluid right away and replaced with Amsoil just to try it. I hope this works out for you. Keep us posted and best of luck.

Thanks for the update. Keep us posted!

Annoying you have to go right back...but that's how it goes often times.

Not yet. I'm going to bring it up during my 5k service... about a month away. I'll definitely keep you guys updated.

I don't expect much though. My howl sounds right in line with what others are hearing. Planning to push them to change the fluid in the diff for examination at least, even if I have to pay for it.

My 2020 is getting the diff replaced on Friday. I'm curious to see how much material is on the magnet. I have 7800 miles on the truck now.
