For Toyota to say the howl is normal, they must have known about it when they tested the truck. So when we take these trucks in reporting diff noise they should just say "We know about the howling diff, we designed it that way". No need for all these diff replacement and extended warranties.

I'm willing to bet it wasn't present at testing and that testing wasn't very extensive, we saw the mule leak photos Summer of 2014, since a lot is carried over from previous gen, wasn't to difficult to get truck production ready I'm guessing and little was abused/extensively tested as they felt it would be good enough/no need.

2015s didn't howl. Something is different. Mine howled almost immediately. Agree testing wasn't extensive.

Its a different diff. But who's to say how long they tested it, etc.

I've been hearing something at 25-30mph that sounds like a howl from the rear end. I've had gear noise in my Mustangs before - but this sounds "different".

Mines a 17 TRD OR DCSB with just over 500 miles.

Welp confirmation nothing has changed for 17. Sorry to hear that, hopefully Toyota has a fix, I posted a video a few pages back and others have too of the sound, many describe it as a ghost woooo kind of sound.

I have my appointment on Thursday afternoon with the regional FTS. Will report how it goes. I expect "normal for vehicle"

Always heard good things about Toyota's quality. That's what makes it hard to believe they let these noisy diffs go in so many trucks. Still like Toyotas, but they'll lose me as a customer if they can't get this right.

Agree 100% this is my 5th Tacoma, they have all had quirks, Toyota has stood by them with frame replacements, leafs, etc. Some of the stories though I'm hearing as of late makes me question if they will stand by these trucks too. I wish I could say Toyota is the same great brand they used to be but I see little difference besides higher resale value and perceived reliability then the other big brands now.

I saw a video and mine sounds exactly the same. I'm just surprised that mine is at a much lower speed than every one else.

I haven't looked - but I would assume that the 17 has the LCA taken care of since the TSB came out a while back?

Nope, the ones on my dealer's lot didn't. Im still waiting on mine (had to order them), wanted to get them plugged first so I can then say look its not that. The sounds are very different, the LCA should only be noticeable in crosswinds. The rear diff howl you can almost pinpoint to the rear of the truck and is more faint and less whistle/windpipe sounding than the LCA.

I can't help but think that they're working on something, which is why we keep hearing it's normal "at this time". Maybe that's just me being overly optimistic though.

I would think that they've ruled out replacing the carrier assembly at this point, but I'd be interested to see some ROs from people that are having diff work done moving forward.

Can't we confirm that it is not a problem with the rear diff? The 8" rear diffs in the 16s were existing Tacoma axles, they do have different gear sets. The driveshaft is a new design however... It's still more of nuisance to me but would be nice to see a fix.

My rear end was making a hell of a noise this afternoon. Problem is, I didn't drive the Tacoma today. But I did have Taco Bell for lunch

It's a work in progress. See my build thread.
Does anyone with an Access Cab have the problem? Do you think it would be as easy to hear with an Access Cab?

You phuckers may be making me paranoid... :lalala:

As is mine - and it is completely stock. At least I *think* it is silent. I'm wondering if the DC makes it easier to hear by virtue of the inside of the cab being a foot (or so) closer to the rear diff.
