Out of curiosity, how many people have the howl on acceleration vs. deceleration?

Mine is on acceleration mostly, although I can hear it also on deceleration if I'm engine braking.

Mine does it on acceleration and deceleration. I also have a faint whine between 30 and 40 but nothing like between 55 and 60.

The ONLY noise I hear is on long downhill in 6th I hear an intermittent high pitch gear like noise. Changes frequency a bit, not a howl, more of a whine, and it has some secondary harmonic almost to the point of hearing 1:1 gear contact. Doesn't last long enough to pop in the clutch or throw into neutral. Hmmmm. Not very loud either.

Yep yours sounds identical to mine then.

Seems the DCSB OR AT trucks are all the same that way.

I've got it on acceleration, don't notice coasting or engine braking, will pay attention here in about an hour when I take off for some errands.

55-60 mph for all observed nonsense

Yeah I noticed it over Christmas on a trip... I was going down a long grade, truck at ~55mph, transmission in S4.

Mine is primarily when i’m giving it juuuust enough throttle to coast or cruise
At speed ranges between 28-63mph or so
i hear it on deceleration around 20-30mph
Some of mine may be transmission noise, given m/t

and yeah, going down a long grade maintaining about 55 is an exercise in torture

Found out today that if I move my head closer to the steering wheel while the howl is going on, it's much quieter (~75% less).

The interior acoustics seem to cause the sound waves to converge right where I normally keep my head. Not a fix, but I thought it was interesting lol...

2018 PRO built in Texas in Feb I believe.

They just replaced the diff carrier and it's fixed. For now.

Purchased a 2017 Limited DC last October with 33000 miles and noticed from the get go that there was a whine from the rear at 45 and higher. I turned on my guitar Tuna app and the whine was a B flat sound. I brought it in today crossing my fingers (35207 miles) and just received a call from the dealership. They are replacing the entire rear differential. Serviceman told me that they have one in stock and it should be ready on the 4th. Happy day! Serviceman was actually congratulating me on the phone.

Your lucky,my 19 tacoma has several issues the dealer either doesnt hear or cant get it to act up,one is rear differential is loud(took it back second week i owned it).second is automatic transmission jerking and shuddering which seems to have fixed itself for now but still abnormal shifting when vehicle is cold.

    None yet.
Well about 1000 miles on the new diff and the whine came back, this time only between 50-60 as far as I can tell. Let’s see what the dealership does, atleast I’m covered till 120k. Do you think it’s best to remove the rear diff breather mod and reinstall the stock one before bringing it in?

Sorry to hear that, but thanks for sharing. I would err on the side of caution and replace the diff breather back to stock.
