If it howls, you know for sure. At least if it's like mine.

If mine howls, it'll just be an excuse to put a 4.56 ECGS center section in

It's a work in progress. See my build thread.
Not to mention, could the under rear seat area be creating an echo chamber and amplifying it. Wasn't someone going to mount a GoPro and get a live video?

Nice response bud. Seeing that most here barely can achieve EPA estimates, and your claiming 3 more in mountains, yes one would find it hard to believe. Take a picture for us next time, and maybe try not calling people names, kind of makes you look like the "asshat" as you put it.

Well then maybe you should not question the honesty of someone you know nothing about. And as far a being a "newb", I did not realize that the number of posts or join date were relevant to anything or diminished the value of my comments.

It doesn't but when you're new to a forum and then go calling people names that speaks a lot about you as a person. But hey welcome! And people tend to infatuate/inflate things especially an online forum of a bunch of primarily guys and their trucks, "I only paid this much", "my truck...etc." so yes when you claim you are getting 3 mpg better than EPA estimates and almost 5-6 mpg better than most of us, fuelly.com numbers for our trucks and in the mountains, one finds it hard to believe.

I apologize for the name. Indeed you are correct that I was out of line. As for the numbers, not my math, just what the little computer said. I will snap a pic next time.

I know everyone here's truck is still under warranty, but I'm gonna ask anyway. Has anyone carried their truck to an independent mechanic's shop? Just wonder if they could fix it and at what cost? Kind of hard to believe they could when Toyota's engineers can't figure it out

No worries bud, just would be some crazy good gas mileage for what most of us are getting.

I have no doubt that a competent driveline shop could fix it, but it wouldn't be cheap and there would be no way to recoup the costs. You could only get Toyota to pay for it by court order and that won't happen unless you give them ample amount of time and opportunities to fix it themselves first.

I would bet an independent shop would be able to troubleshoot and come up with a solution, but I highly doubt Toyota would honor the warranty after a third party got involved.

Fix what? The howling? That happens when the gears/bearings have worn in (in the wrong way). Once that happens, only option is to replace it, it will never stop howling.

So, depending on the extent of things, that right there can be a complete overhaul, which Toyota is pretty much doing by replacing the complete differential.

If the root cause of the howling was to be, say, incorrect bearing preload or things weren't shimmed correctly, then that is easy and relatively inexpensive for a driveline shop to fix. Unfortunately with a differential you usually don't start messing with it until it is too late (starts making noise) and at that point things need to be replaced....
