I had the same headache with my service department. The service manager flat out told me that the whining is normal and all 3rd gen Tacomas have the issue so they refused to even investigate my truck.

I called Toyota and explain what happened. They immediately said whining is not normal or acceptable and apologized for the service manager refusing to investigate. They scheduled me a ride along in a like model truck with the same service manager. The truck had zero whine. Four days later I had a new diff in my truck and it is silent.

I completely agree. I think the noise affects all trucks in certain trims/configurations.

Mine was church pew silent after my first diff replacement. Then it came back. Please keep us posted and let us know if yours stays silent.

I hope for your sake you got the holy grail of rear diffs, but if I were you I wouldn't get my hopes too high just yet.

Mine is annoying, but not crazy loud. I did stop driving around with my rear seats folded because of it being louder then. And i tend to drive about 62 in a 55 mph zone lately.

That's good news. Out of curiosity, is your truck MT or AT? Also noticed you have an AAL lift, modded tires and wheels. They *could* be affecting the howl in your case.

Regardless, enjoy the quiet ride

My truck is a auto trans. I put about 3k miles on this diff before I did any modifications.

I believe there were some earlier in the thread that mentioned after a lift and tires the noise went away.. May be the case or you may have gotten lucky..

Mine has been howling on decel at 65+ for a long time. Barely louder than the MT's. I haven't thought much of it, I knew my pattern and BL was perfect, but I started to hear a light clunking at low speeds. Pulled the diff to inspect and found a couple of broken teeth. I think maybe 35's, offroading, and the 8" diff don't love each other

I'm stunned at how little noise this was making though.

You don't have stock ring and pinion though right?

No, I don't. But they were properly set up and high quality. I'm wondering if the housing design or driveshaft has something to do with the noise people are hearing. Maybe the cuts of these gears (stock and aftermarket) make noise at a certain mesh and something is amplifying it.

I've set up a lot of gears and checked a lot of OEM setups and I've seen some HORRIBLE setups in new vehicles. So I wouldn't be surprised if there is some weird variance.

I think he is saying he put 3k miles on the new diff before any mods and it was quiet, and still is quiet.

Hasn't it been reported that people are still having the same howling even after re-gearing to aftermarket gear sets?

I think so. So if were to armchair engineer this, it must be some resonance being amplified by the housing or driveshaft. Could even be the bed doing it  I don't think it's a problem per-say.

Maybe one day Toyota will care enough to figure it out.

I fully understood that. My 2018 had 2500-3500 miles on it before the noise started originally. Also others stated the noise went away with a lift and tires. Could be a combo or finally a good diff is what I was saying.

If his new diff was quiet for 3k miles before any mods, and it still is quiet...then the mods didn't have anything to do with making it quiet. Let's be clear on that point for other people's reference in trying to solve this noise.

Lift and tires has seemed to help some people who already had the howling before modifying their truck.

    That's two separate situations.

Ok, good talk. Maybe one day we will solve this indefinitely...for all trucks.

There have been diffs that have been quiet for 15K miles before they howling started. Let’s hope this last diff stays quiet. I have my doubts, but there is always hope.

I see your point, but you are still missing mine and guess I need to make it clearer..
-It is a good thing it has been quiet up to 3k, there is hope a new diff solves this.
-A lift and tires have helped some with a howling diff, so this is a possible solution for some.

With his truck we will never know with his if it starts howling after 3k (if a lift and tires does help).

We are both saying the same, but I am adding that he could be a combination of both topics since we are not comparing stock to stock.
