Dealer called and my truck is ready.
He says "dont kill the messenger", but the noise emitting from the back of the truck is normal for that specific model". (Trd or)
I corrected him stating that it isnt "normal", just more prevalent, so you are considering it "normal".
Im going to complain to Toyota, even though I realize they will do nothing.
Then Ill take it to a dedicated diff shop and ask them .
I tried, but sort of upsetting.

Tough brake. If its any consolation we OR owner have and are all going through the same thing. Its such an annoying, not normal sound you have a hard time making peace with the fact that Toyota is standing by such shitty engineering and QC.

Let us know how it goes at the dedicated diff shop if you end up going down that route! Good luck

That was my 2016, I assure you it's not dog hearing nonsense, its pretty annoying in a quiet cabin and has varied amongst my turd gens. I've had some with and without this magical flute hum of the rear diff.

Why not order the TSB parts and put them on. You should already have the springs (depending on build date they may even be the MT version even if you have an auto.) You'll only need the body mount pucks and the C pillar foam. The c pillar foam is about $6 a piece so you can order 4 and put two in each side... the tsb pieces don't cure the sound but they do lessen it, worth $200 or so! Are you running a tonneau- if so run with it off/open (some have reported its worse with a closed tonneau).

My dealer did the same. I opened a case with Toyota about the issues and I now have a new and silent diff in my truck.

Maybe... Don't want to ruin your cake, but when they replaced my 16's diff, all was fine and dandy till 2k miles in, then it came back in the new diff, same for diff number 3 which at that point I traded.

This diff now has about 12,000 miles on it and its been great. No whining at all.
My 2018 and the first diff in this truck were awful.

You would be the first member on here I think who got their diff replaced and it permanently fixed the noise. A trip to the casinos should be in your future :p

Yep, my 16 was 3 diffs (2 replaced) before I dumped the truck.

Serious question- how many 3rd gen Tacoma’s have you been in possession of?

No, I didn’t know you had one.

I remember when you were stationed in NJ shooting the shit in the NJ BS thread though, and think you have traded in a few Tacoma’s to get newer ones.

    Just curious how many.

Lol, no worries, they change like my underwear, 8 turds, 3 2nd gens, 1 1st gen, this one will be my last tacoma, unless they blow my mind in 2024.

This howling problem is strange. I know a friend that trades up for new tacos every 3 years. He uses them in his business. Neither his 2016 trd or 2019 trd has had the howling issue.

Yeah same with mine. Sport suspension is known to be pretty firm but I didn't know that about the SR. My father's 2010 SR rides a little softer than mine and we both have access cabs.

Mine has Hitachi shocks but not sure about the SR though.

When i ordered my tacoma from a dealer willing to do it, i require an sr5 access cab that had the various options i wanted. Don't know exactly what shocks, or suspension springs are in this truck, but the shock bodies are fairly large compared to what my tundra sr5 had.

Not hard dude, single, no kids, no mortgage, multiple deployments, reenlistment bonus, rented with roommates and saved BAH whole time I served. Got out as an E-6 @10 years. Instead of blowing my money on daycare, beer or some fancy apartment or whatever else people spend money on, spent my money on trucks and bikes.
