3rd Gen Poll: Rear End Noise howling when feathering throttle

I know there’s no solution to this but what have you guys done to reduce the noise? I feel like mine is unbearingly loud even when the volume is up to 35.

 

I had the same scenario a couple of weeks ago. Truck has just over 20k miles. I drove it until the noise got too loud. All is good right now. It is very quiet.

 

I'd gladly trade some noise in my taco for a better, more compliant ride.

 

Any updates on Toyota silencing the whine? Does anyone know how to check if newer models were added to the existing TSB?

 

You should have went with the Off Road as it has a smoother more compliant ride.

 

I had to verbally spar with toyo u.s.a. rep. regarding the whine. She constantly informed me that the rear diff whine was/is a normal attribute in the Off road model. Dealer informed me of the same after affirming the whine. The dealer even went as far as to tell me the Tundras are having this "Normal" issue. I went to a different dealer who advised that's it not normal. Second dealer did change the rear diff assembly. All was good for about 900 miles. Then the whine returned. Although It's not as loud (volume) , it's still present. It is loud enough that it's embarrassing when passengers are in the rear seat. The main problem for me is that you cannot "un-hear" it. I can only attempt to ignore it. I was hesitant to let second dealer change the parts out. Others on this forum have ended up with regrets because it resulted in it being worse .
I've considered ways to isolate the the rear axle and drive line from the frame. HDPE shims, teflon, other materials placed between axle and springs. But cost of experimenting is prohibitive for me. The diff whine and autotrans shifting logic is my largest (only) complaints. Personally, I'd trade it in if the loss wasn't going to be so huge.
If toyo ever offers a diesel in the tundra, I may reconsider my losses.
I do hope the dealer and new diff install solves your issues.

I’m not sure about other dealerships, but mine just tried to charge me $260 to diagnose the whine during my 15000 mile service. My truck is well under warranty being a 2019, so I believe this is a new tactic Toyota is pulling to hinder people from getting acknowledgment of an issue and do something about it. What good is a F#&$ing warranty if their now going to gouge you to address poor QC?

Anyway, Ive grown to not care anymore if I don’t obsess about it. Getting ready to do a 5100 lift and some other stuff. I think 15000 miles is the magic number of acceptance/tolerance for me.

 

That "diagnose" fee isn't a Toyota thing, it's a slimy service department thing.

Update for me.

I’m not sure what has changed but my howl comes and goes. I can go weeks before it pops up and when it does pop up it’s not that bad (comparatively to how awful it used to be).

I have 58k miles and the last couple of years I’ve done a few loads of fire wood in the truck and the rear springs have settled quite a bit. About level with the front of the truck. Not sure if it’s related or not.

 

Has anyone with deep pockets thought about going to a Dana 60 new rear axle assembly? Could be the cure. Toyota is using a third world cheap mfgr in Thailand to build their front and rear axle assemblies.

 

I have had the issue for two years now and I only have 12k miles on truck. First time they replaced the rear differential and noise reduced a lot for about 1k miles and then started again. Two more times complaining to 2 different dealerships and they said it is normal. Even one of dealership's technicians admitted it is not normal but he can not do anything about it since according to Toyota headquarters thats a normal noise. I wish the truck had the noise when I did a test drive.
Anyways if Toyota is right then all tacoma offroad third gens must have the same issue. I wonder if anybody with similar experience like me had a chance to check another truck with at least 10k on it and notice that there are actually trucks that don't make noise. If anybody knows please let me know.
If there are trucks out there that don't make noise I will go to dealership and trade in this crap. This time though I know exactly how to check the new truck for any sign of noise

 

One year later and 16000kms(10000miles) my rearend whine is just barely noticable,not an issue,hasnt got any better or worse.

 

My 2019 Sport TRD 4x4 AT 3.5 liter crew Cab Long Bed with 13K.
It has a loud harmonic whine at 1500 rpm between 50-60 mph. It’s loud & very annoying! Carrier bearing?? Sounds like it’s right behind the drivers seat. Two dealerships & corporate have said, “Sorry, they all do that”. Zero attempt to even try to repair.
I’ve hired an attorney & attempting to Lemon Law the truck. I would not feel right selling it to someone else.
I owned a 2006 Sport TRD for 13 yrs & currently own a 2016 Highlander. Very disappointed with Toyota!!!

 

19 off road and very minimal howling, honestly on 34inch mud terrain tires there’s a lot more noise so it drowns out and I could care less, the dif is fine just switched out the dif oil 2k miles ago and the oil looked perfectly fine and the magnet was pretty much empty

 

Not certain it’s the rear diff that’s causing the problem. It would be nice if Toyota at least attempted to reconcile the problem.
Besides...a $40K vehicle should not have this issue.
