Did they wear improperly? If so, HAVE YOUR AXLES CHECKED. There is another poster here who was eating pads… that was his issue - out of spec axle.

H, I had the same thing done to my Taco a few weeks back. Completely fixed the issue, no more noise. Dealer tech said a "pinion gear" caused it. Take that for what it's worth. Sorry to hear your noise persists.

If it's not the howl it's going to be something else that bothers you about the truck. Either sell the truck and make money back or get bigger tires louder stereo or new exhaust and enjoy your truck. We all have this and dealt with it

I’m too lazy to read all 314 pages. My Tacoma has 9000 miles on it now and the howl has gotten quite a bit louder. On a smooth road 50-65 miles an hour under light deceleration or acceleration in 6th gear. It doesn’t bother me at all (it’s a truck after all). BUT is there any correlation between the howl and failures? I’m thinking doing the black stone labs test at 10k and putting in some amsoil 75w-90 that has been so good in my 4runner.

I’ve been watching this thread for a year and the only time I have this issue is when I’m driving in higher elevation. The elevation at my house is approximately 210 feet above sea level. Whenever I hear it, I’m usually at around 2-3k feet above sea level. I cannot verify that elevation causes this issue but it does for me

Ive had the howl and Ive also had it go away by itself twice now. Both times have been when each set of tires Ive had on reached a point of around 15000 miles of wear. I dont no why but only know that it has disappeared. I think some of u might be chasing ghosts trying to remedy the issue by replacing parts.

Like some have mentioned, mine makes a whistling sound (not a howl). It's definitely somewhat metallic sounding. Was originally unsure if it was a wind noise or something in the rear of the truck. Hade my wife drive while I sat and listened out the cab rear window and confirmed it's not a wind noise.

I replaced the diff fluid about a month ago with the heavier Lucas fluid, and that didn't seem to change anything. Condition of the factory fluid (at about 6K) was grey but there was not any noticeable metal on the magnetic plug.

The bottom of my truck has been coated in cosmo and that also didn't impact the noise that I'm experiencing. Concerned about it, but until it gets worse I doubt there's anything that can be done.

I traded to a GMC dealer and purchased the GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 with the duramax diesel engine on June 18th.
The allotted trade value was within $250 from my new tacoma purchase price in January 2020, after 27K miles and 18 months of miserable ownership. A definite win in my opinion. So far, After 6k miles on the GMC, I'm loving it. Quiet as gas engine (almost), and everything is useable. Cruise control works awesome. Great mileage, exceedingly better than the tacoma. Very quiet on the road and wind doesn't effect it. (crosswinds would cause the tacoma to sway and change lanes). GMC climbs long central Texas highway hills without downshifting. Taco would downshift 2 gears.
The best deal I've made to keep my sanity. I'm through with toyota in general. When they have prevalent problems they call it "Normal". done and done.

I might be right behind you. Got my 2021 Taco 5 days ago, whining rear end, rattling front passengers seat, now some new noise from the front end passsengers side when going over bumps. Have not searched out the new noise but I imagine it will be deemed "normal". Not feeling great about my purchase. :(

Bought new 2021 TRD Offroad Manual trans in Denver a few weeks back with 21 miles. Driving back to Dallas my truck had a whine develope about 150 miles into my trip home. At 1st i thought transfer case low on fluid (neighbors 2005 Z71 Tahoe developed a whine noise at 120K miles...he only had about a quart of fluid drain out and no apparent leaks...transfer case was toast). Welll at about 250 miles my trucks whine or hum went away. Have 1250 miles now and still no noise. I plan on checking fluid levels in diffs, MT and transfer case. Also add grease to ujoints. Hope i got a good taco and noise never comes back and i get 3 or 400k trouble free miles!

I had this howl for literally years on my 2017 ... then it went away after I lifted it a year ago. Hasn't come back since. Riddle me that...

Just thought I would throw my 2 cents in. I took my 2021 trd in last week for the dreaded howl noise. I was told it was a hermonic issue. The ordered new dampener kit to install behind rear seat. This TSB was for 2016-2018 trucks not 21. Dropped it of today to get that installed. They called me and I was told it helped but the howl/Whistle was still there. The tech called the toyota field engineer and was told to drain the rear end and check for metal. The tech said there was a lot more than normal metal flake in the oil. He showed me the oil and I could see it. I asked wasn't that normal for a new truck and was told not this much. I was informed they are getting me a new rear end and I will have it back fri or sat morning. Hopefully this is a fix but I am worried about having this big of a repair at 7k miles. What do you guys think?

I had it. Install body-mount damper, put some AT tires on and vala! You will barely hear it anymore.

Unless the metal shavings were out of the ordinary of a break in I would just leave the differential as it is from factory
