Yep my whine is from 55-60 with light throttle.....its been there since about 1000 miles or so. Was just surprised tonight when it was almost gone...I was so use to it that when it wasn't there it seemed like something was wrong :(

The whine at 30 is definitely from the rear and varies with slight changes in throttle so I doubt it is lca?

I haven't checked for lca plugs but I've never heard anything that came from Feont always clearly from the rear

Swcolo: saw the note in your service ticket about the radio restarting. Mine does this if I use a 3rd party (cheap) cable for my iPhone. It doesn't do it if I use the apple cable. With the cheap cable it will just randomly restart? Never happens at any other time....just thought I'd pass that on in case you had something similar happening

I went to the dealership this morning and spoke with the shop foreman. Toyota is saying that the issue is under investigation but they're telling the formans to say that it's normal. He said the issue is driveline related -probably something to do with the drive shaft which is why those who had the diff replaced still have the issue.

ETA : he actually read through this thread.

My SA actually said something similar about a corporate investigation the last time my truck was in. However, the folks at corporate still deny that there is an issue. You did the right thing though, get it documented and keep on truckin'.

He also told me that the 17 LCAs do not have the whistling issue - they look the same but apparently the angles or location of the holes is slightly different. I don't have both to compare side by side, but he appeared confident that it is not an issue on 17s.

@RBOGLE thanks for the hint. I did not have a cable connected when mine went crazy. Just my phone via Bluetooth. The pic cut off the rest of the note, there is a TSB flash available to help with the issue. Tech said it was updated programming to try and keep pace with technology of phones and devices.

Update: FTS went on ride along with me. He was already well aware of the issue before we got in my truck and said toyota is working on a field fix. He did not speculate as to what is causing it. He did speculate at some potential fixes but the only one I recall was "a mass dampener", he said all the howling diffs they've pulled theyve sent back to lab and lab looked at internals, everything is still in spec. So it's a noise issue they seem to be concerned with solving, not a premature wear or failure issue. He said his guesstimate for timeline was 2 to 3 months but not to quote him on that.

Good news in my book. I expect we'll see a TSB sooner rather than later. Perhaps in the next couple of months once they figure out the field fix.

I asked him about driveline vibrations and he blew it off/changed the subject. Said he was not aware of the issue essentially.

Sorry I didn't have more detail to offer. Been pretty busy lately. Look forward to others' reports. For now I wait for my service manager to call me once the fix has been released. FTS said he would be in contact with my dealer and that he is an elephant and never forgets anything, so he looks forward to contacting them once the fix is in for me.

Edit: He said it is good that everyone comes in and reports issues to their dealer and gets a TAS case for all issues that the dealer is having a hard time resolving. He said they really do read through all of those reports and try to find trends or emerging issues. He seemed like a really nice and down to earth guy. I enjoyed talking with him and my intuition told me he was being very honest and transparent.

@smitty99 not sure if you saw my post and paperwork, but the tech said the rear drive pinion bearing had excessive play on my truck. Maybe someone on here knows what the per TAS case 162290685 comment on my paperwork means. While not a TSB, it appears it is a directive from Toyota on what to do.

If it is true that all the diffs that were sent back were fine, and this is just some weird noise, then I feel a little bit better. At least I won't have to worry about getting stranded somewhere while they try to figure this out! So I would also tally this in the "Good News" column!

My tech paperwork said my rear diff had premature wear. Later it was explained to me that the tech merely has to select some type of "check the box" condition in order for the warranty work to be approved by corporate so in essence they just "fudged" a condition to see if throwing parts at the problem would resolve my issue -- which it did not and which proves why throwing parts at a problem is not the right to go about failure resolution. Sorry for run on sentence.

TAS does not mean anything its just the TAS case for your technical report / issue from your dealer for your specific problem. It is not a directive from toyota. It's just a way of documenting your problem.

It's okay, I fully gummed up on the 4.30 auto diffs from that old spreadsheet lol. I'll take a speed dependent aerodynamic whistle vortex for 500 Alex! New driveshafts for everybody!!!

Sounds like you've got a good dealer there. Maybe Toyota will figure this out, with all these engineers looking at all these different trucks. Also, hope this problem is not as bad as we think. I like my truck more the longer I have it, even with the noisy diff.
