All 2017 models come with the TSB coding already in the computer. So what you felt was not programming, it was transmission hard parts doing something wrong.
Everyone in here keeps quoting me saying stuff I've never said. I have never been given a loaner because I waa covered inhouse instead of under warranty each time I've taken in the truck. Only after they diagnose will they call it a warranty and then they can give you a loaner. I'm happy with the Enterprise Rentals I've been getting. Not really happy with that first piece of shit volkswagen they gave me, but it was ok. I have a frontier now. It's nice to drive something else some times

How many rear ends have blown up, failed, or grenaded? I have only seen the one guy with the video where he was doing doughnuts...

    Has their been anyone else?

I noticed that the more chili I eat, the more my rear end makes noise

Plus I am pretty sure that all the totally failed diff storise that I have seen have involved a leaking diff. So yeah, don't want to drive on a diff with low or no fliud....duh....

You sure the 2017 come with the TSB? I've heard people saying it didn't?

The 8" diff is a carryover, the 8.75" is all new. The gear set is new on both, regardless if it is 3.90 or 4.3. I suspect there are other changes/updates to them as well.

I'm losing my sanity though thinking there is a possibility Toyota (or their contracted supplier) goofed up a rear differential, there is absolutely no new technology in it. Same thing that has been going on for years.

Makes me wonder if there is some other odd coupling issue with it or if it is purely a manufacturing error.....or maybe not the rear differential at all?

I just hope they fix it, the extended warranty really is a nice offer, but 125k miles of "normal howling" won't leave me wanting another new Tacoma at the end.....

I've had my 2017 TRD OR DCLB for about a month. I noticed a howling as soon as I got it home when driving 30-45 mph. Mine sounds like it's coming from the front driver side. I really only hear it when the window is down and it comes and goes. I thought it was the the wind catching something on the driver side of my truck or possibly the front tires. After reading this I'm a little worried. I will keep a close eye on it and post updates here. Should I notify the dealership now or wait till my first service? Thanks for all the info on here. Shaun

Someone mentioned when theirs was serviced it looked like excessive wear on the pinion almost like it was corroded or something.
I wonder if maybe they tried using a new alloy to make it lighter or stronger and its having problems.

Given it doesn't impact all tacomas, could even just be a manufacturing error on the alloys. Maybe a bad batch? I see it all the time in construction with different conduit all from the same supplier coming, sometimes made with a bad batch where we can't even bend it without it kinking or splitting along the seam. Could be the same case with the new diff. Just a shit batch of gears made and they haven't caught the suppliers error?

Even more so it being only at certain speed is making me think its not a material issue but a set up issue.
Maybe at said speed it causes the gearing to vibrate or something at a resonant frequency to make the annoying howl. Which would make me think its a bearing issue.

Yeah, but it would only take ONE bad differential returned to Toyota for them to figure it out. But lets assume they get multiple returned. They are a huge company and have all sorts of stuff for this. I'm sure they even have a test stand that is purely just the power train combo where they can throw the returned 3rd member in and verify the howl, removing a whole ton of other factors. If the howl is (or even isn't) heard on the stand they could tear it apart and visually inspect the wear on all components, then send the gear set/bearings over to the materials lab and verify the surface finish.

It really isn't anything complicated or out of reach for a multi billion dollar company.

The thing that really throws a wrench into it is if they inspect the returned 3rd member and truly find no glaring defect OR (the real kicker) anything out of engineering spec. Then it has to go back to engineering and could take some time, assuming the issue even makes it past management.

That's the holes in the lower control arms. There is a tsb plug up for it. Shows up in that speed range. The rear end howl shows up at a higher speed after the lca stops making noise and is in the rear

Mine was fixed last week. It only took 3 hours for the new one to be replaced. It's very quiet for now. I hope it stays that way. How did people get the 125k warranty? Was is because the noise came back or is it something I would be entitled to now for having this issue arise?

Good luck! They replaced mine and the noise was still there on the new one as soon as I drove away. Told me it was now considered normal at this time and offered the warranty as a show of good faith.

there's been users on here with later build dates reporting the same issue and when checking VIN it still had a TSB for it?

You have to call Toyota Corporate and pretty much ask for an extended warranty. They won't just give it to you.

    Mostly stuff I built.
Mine goes in for replacement Wednesday morning. Fingers crossed. My howl is now noticeable from 35 mph on up. No matter if I am accelerating or decelerating. Almost 14k miles on it.
