I just got my truck back from the dealer. They told me that it is exhaust noise and they all do it. Im going to have a ride along tomorrow to make sure we are listening to the same noise.

Bahahaha, definitely not an exhaust noise.

My only recommendation guys is.... wait until toyota came with a real solution. Why? Because after my truck got 3 rear differentials replaced still howling.

    1st howling
    2st leak
    3 howling then grinding

    And still howling 60mph

A new diff will not fix the issue

While it's very true that a new differential won't help, I would personally still like to see each and every person with a howling differential go in and get replacement differentials even if the new ones howl too. It'll bleed Toyota's pockets and force them to solve the problem faster.

I'm a very patient person by nature but if we all sit around and patiently wait then they have no real motivation to act.

My 2nd diff got replaced just because was leaking not because was howling. My 3rd diff was replaced just because was grinding at lower speed not because was howling... they said in 3 different dealers i went. "Normal characteristics of the truck"

Just like with trannys, the mechs wont tear down a diff anymore. It sucks that the second diff might have just need a $5 seal replaced, but setting preload can be difficult if you dont do it often, so I guess it makes sense that they would rather swap it out and get you down the road.

I understand and I've followed your other posts so I'm familiar with your situation. I know that it was a lot of time and leg work for you and that sucks but look at the numbers. What do you think Toyota Corporate's actually profit was from your original purchase? $5k? $10k? I honestly don't know.

They have since spent much more than that dicking around with your differentials. In the end, they lost money on you. They would have been better off not building your truck at all.

Losing money gives a strong incentive to solve the problem and since I have this problem on my second differential I'd appreciate it if many more people waste their time and Toyota's money chasing a solution that doesn't yet exist.

I just got back from an appointment with a Toyota field technician. Referred to himself as a "factory" technician, so I asked him which Toyota factory he's from. He chuckled. :)

The Field Tech did acknowledge the issue and said that Toyota is aware of it and "is working on it". He said that they don't have a solution yet but they know this is an issue for many and although he doesn't know when he expects a TSB or solution in the future.

As a shot from the hip he tried adding Ford Fluid XL-3 Friction Modifier Additive to the diff fluid. He agreed that it was a mechaninc-in-a-bottle band-aid solution, but that it may reduce the noise until a real fix is determined. It did nothing.

His final recommendation was to try replacing my diff with a "champion" diff. I asked, "is champion a brand"? He said, "champion" means a diff that gets built by hand to tighter specs. Makes sense to me. We agreed that if Toyota doesn't come up with a fix or TSB by my 10k service we will schedule the diff replacement for that visit.

Doesn't seem like there are any better solutions at the moment. I expect to need 10k service around April/May of 2017. Until then I can enjoy

Just got my truck back after ride along. The tech and service writer originally was listening to the wrong noise. But they said they can not tell where it is coming from and for that they would make note and wait for it to get worse

Has anyone had the pinon bearing preload checked for this "off power" gear whine?

I'm not going to pay to have anyone do this and risk voiding the warranty, and I think most people with this issue feel the same way. While it's under warranty it's Toyota's problem, and per Corporate, it's "normal" for now.

Now if Toyota decides they want to go this route then I'm all for it.

Eventually someone will pay to have it done, it'll fix the problem, and then they'll take Toyota to small claims court to recover their expenses since Toyota is refusing to fix the problem.

I'm off the week after Christmas. Maybe I'll get bored and give it a shot. The sound is embarrassing and getting louder. I've been secretly hoping that someone that's retired does it first so there was precedent but I'm getting tired of the sound drowning out my radio.

I doubt anyone would gain, nor should they really aim to in my opinion. Recouping the cost of a 3rd party fix plus court costs would prove a point in the court of public opinion, make me whole, and maybe expedite a more widespread fix. I don't feel that they owe me more than that.
