Agreed. I am thankful for the ways smitty helped me. I do enjoy my truck, but there were certainly some issues that needed to be squared away, and smitty helped a lot with these. Now I enjoy my truck more. I am an engineer, and I can verify smitty was spot on in every one of his posts.

So it's just a subpar transmission and rear differential bottom line.

Just had mine in to the shop today for the rev1 transmission TSB and to inspect my 55-59 mph whine with light throttle. The dealership said I needed a new gear for the rear diff which will be ordered. I've read a few posts saying a replacement gear didn't make a difference. Has anyone replaced the rear diff and actually had a resolution of the whine? Generally, I wouldn't care about a small noise from the driveline at only a certain speed. But since the speed limit in HI is 50mph for most of our major freeways, I spend a lot of time cruising along at 56mph--right in the sweet spot of that obnoxious sound. Even my 4y/o made mention of it. "What's that sound dad?"

Has anyone gotten a warranty extension for this issue? How did you go about accomplishing that?

Have you filed a complaint with Toyota corporate? If not, then Google Toyota customer service, call the 800 number, and file a complaint. You will need to be persistent. Toyota may offer you an extended warranty.

Two questions for the gurus: do these third members use crush washers? Is it possible they are losing preload after a certain amount of use/abuse?????

Sounds like a mechanically fine driveline and not enough sound deadening for princess and pea types. That is actually good news... dynamat is easy to install.

I have the experience, engineering background, and automotive experience. I will back up smitty here. He is, in fact correct. By the way, Toyota has already admitted to both of the subpar components. They are working in fixes because fixes are needed.

don't matter neither did my 64 Chevy, you are making unsubstantiated claims about transmissions and rears based on what you perceive not based on what the facts are. the 2016 rears have been checked out by experts on transmissions and rears and are deemed up to spec and are performing as they should. next time the Toyota inspect your rear or transmission you should school them on the finer points of how a tranny or rear should sound with your vast background on these subjects.

no they are not flaws the trans or rears have not had any malfunctions or breakdowns based on the fact that some owners do not like the sound at certain speeds or whatever the case is. Toyota is working to satisfy those who are obsessed with the fact they are driving a truck not a hovercraft and all vehicles will have driveline noises of some sort even a 1968 GTO has them. if I don't like the sound of my OEM muffler at 65mph it has a drone that I don't personally don't like and even after the replacement with the same OEM exhaust it still has the drone I personally don't like does that mean in my personal opinion its defective and sub par or is unsafe to operate? therefore my personal opinion on the muffler is only my opinion, not a qualified expert opinion

I agree the driveline checks out by experts, not by Smitty99s expert opinion on trans/rears since he has had vast experience with 68 GTOs
