I hate to say it, but the dealer may not always offer you a solution for various reasons. I would still try what Aussiek2000 said for myself, all it can hurt is a little time of which has already been spent in the effort.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

It is 100% not tire related.

That may be true in some cases of course, but it ought not to be dismissed for all possible scenarios when no other solution seems to be working.

    Hope that helps

If it were tire related it would be speed sensitive, not throttle sensitive.

It may be the fluid, who knows? I think 75w-90 or whatever they put in there for gas mileage these days is too thin for a truck differential but that's only my opinion of course.

Has anyone checked their driveshaft slip joint for looseness?

I know this is 3rd gen, but my '06 RC 4x4 has had a howl between 45-60 mph with neutral load on the drivetrain since I bought it 5 yrs ago. I finally diagnosed it as a slightly loose slip joint. It actually disappears with a heavy load in the bed. There have been a few other early 2nd gen RC owners who have experienced the same thing and "fixed" it by flipping the driveshaft (actually just moves the noise away from the cab).

Just a suggestion, and it is free to check it yourself.

Good thought! I'll have the dealer look into this.

Thinking about this some more. Dealer did put my truck on a lift and used a stethoscope to listen to the diff assembly and this is where they isolated the noise. So I'm thinking in that case it isn't likely a slip joint?

But aren't all 4X4 stock trims the same angle, or is the TRDOR different, as not all appear to have the same issue?

The other point I'm wondering is the locker. What with all that's going on back there, ATRAC, LSD, locker, I know that electronically it's supposed to cancel any conflict between them, but is it? I would hope the engineers can find a solution soon

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

My though is, that if the electronics are somehow failing on some, not all, like the trans was, it might be an area the engineers maybe working on, IDK, But I honestly hope it can be all sorted out soon.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

Excellent question. And I think the answer is "no". The Off Roads have a different suspension, and this would likely shift the angle to some extent.

But the problem is this issue is prevalent on all models not just the TRD OR. That's already been ruled out.

MY rear end doesn't howl at 65, (I'm driving)..but my son mooned a nice old couple on the freeway the other day...out the rear window at about 65MPH, and I'm sure I did hear the howl you are talking about..... It sort of sounded like "The Hammer"....:bananadance:

Well if there' a difference in the angle it still doesn't explain why not all trdor are affected some ppl off road heavy with stock no issues.

But I won't be a bit surprised if it turns out to be something small or mundane such as a bad run on crush washer or bearing or seat.
But all replaced parts go back to Toyota for them to examine and if they find something it takes time to trace the part and find out which ones maybe affected.
I would have gotten the trd if they would've had it in white l/b so i hope they get to the bottom soon.

    Cheers!

That is what I am kinda leaning toward. Something small that they just haven't 100% pinned down yet. I am sure that Toyota will take care of me! The only question is how long will it take?

Yeah, I am already on my second one. Hopefully the field engineer will be able to look at my second one in a little over a week. Thankfully no one at my dealership has told me "well that is normal" or "you're just gonna have to live with it." It has actually been the opposite! Things like "Thanks for being patient with us." And "We'll get this sorted out for you."

Been watching this thread for a while. My truck has this problem. TRD ORDC. Waiting till they find a fix before I take it in. Hope they find it soon. Really like the truck. The howling diff is the only problem it has. 1200 miles
